Senior IT Project Manager

Apex Systems is a global IT services provider, and our staffing practice has an opening for a Sr IT Project Manager to place at our client, a top Canadian Bank.

Client: A top Canadian Bank

Terms: 6 months, with possibility to extend

Location: Hybrid - Downtown - 1 day a week

Pay Rate: $60-$70 (T4 employee)

About the Role

The Sr. IT Project Manager will lead large-scale, complex technology initiatives spanning cloud, data, and enterprise platforms. While some programs involve data modernization, deep data expertise is not required. Instead, the PM must have strong experience overseeing complex IT programs and be highly skilled in financial governance, stakeholder management, and navigating cross-functional tech teams.

This role requires a PM who is confident, independent, and able to make decisions quickly. The successful candidate will "own the room," protect project scope, and push back appropriately when needed.

Project Delivery

• Lead end-to-end delivery of complex, tech-heavy initiatives across Enterprise Technology.
• Manage cross-functional workstreams involving engineering, cloud, data, and platform teams.
• Drive clarity across ambiguous technical requirements and ensure alignment between business and IT.

Financial Governance

• Manage program financials including forecasting, burn tracking, accruals, variance analysis, and overhead.
• Ensure financial accuracy and timely reporting for budgets ranging from $100K to $80M.
• Partner closely with finance and leadership to maintain transparency and control.

Leadership & Stakeholder Management

• Work independently with minimal direction-able to "step in on day one" and start running.
• Push back effectively with both business and technical stakeholders to protect project scope and timelines.
• Provide clear, concise project updates to senior leaders.

Technology & Delivery Oversight

• Oversee delivery components involving Azure, Databricks, and enterprise data platforms (experience preferred, not required to be hands-on).
• Ensure compliance with enterprise security, encryption standards, and data-sharing guidelines.
• Manage risk, dependencies, and complex integration points across the tech stack.

Qualifications

Required

• 7+ years of IT Project Management experience leading complex, technical initiatives.
• Strong background managing projects within Financial Institutions
• Confidence leading technical teams and challenging both business and engineering when necessary.
• Proven ability to operate independently, make quick decisions, and drive delivery without handholding.
• Robust financial governance experience (forecasting, burn, overhead, variance mgmt).
• Experience with complex enterprise technology environments (cloud, data, BI, lending systems, etc.).

Nice to Have

• Exposure to cloud and data modernization programs (Azure, Databricks, data migration).
• Experience with lending BI, edge data, or related complex data ecosystems.
• PMP or equivalent certification.
• Familiarity with AI/ML or advanced analytics environments.
