Work Location

  • This position will be located at the Energy Center in Birmingham, AL (4 days in office)
  • Travel required: up to 25%

POSITION SUMMARY

Generation Planning & Development has responsibility for assisting Southern Company's retail operating companies with the siting, development, and deployment of fossil-fueled power generation resources. These resources can be sourced through new company-owned proposals, existing facility conversion, and/or acquisition of third-party assets.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Leading and/or serving on diverse, enterprise-wide project teams in the evaluation and development of fossil-fueled power generation resources and other strategic initiatives
  • Negotiation, development, and/or management of contracts
  • Conducting economic evaluations and business case development using spreadsheet-based financial models
  • Performing market intelligence efforts (technology development, pricing, commercial viability)
  • Preparing and presenting project evaluation results and/or project business cases to all levels of enterprise-wide management and peer groups

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in engineering, mathematics, business, economics or finance required. An advanced degree is highly desirable, particularly an MBA
  • Experience in project development, project management and/or leadership, large capital projects, contract development, contract negotiation and contract management/administration is a plus
  • Knowledge of fossil-fueled, renewable electric generation, and storage technologies
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: financial analysis, production cost modeling, integrated resource planning is beneficial

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Proven analytical, interpersonal, and creative problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency with standard analytical and business software such as Microsoft Office applications is required.
  • Project management skills are required. These skills include the ability to work across multiple organizations, lead a team toward a common objective, resolve problems and demonstrate clear, effective communication skills.
  • Ability to blend financial, engineering and contractual concepts is needed as this position is integral to the development and deployment of generation assets in a manner consistent with Southern Company's capital plan.
  • Demonstrated ability to build consensus and effectively communicate complex topics in verbal and written form.
  • Professional registrations and/or certifications in applicable areas of project management and engineering are a plus.
