Intern, Interiors Engineering

Job Description

Slate Auto

ABOUT SLATE

At Slate, we're building safe, reliable vehicles that people can afford, personalize and love-and doing it here in the USA as part of our commitment to reindustrialization. The spirit of DIY and customization runs throughout every element of a Slate, because people should have control over how their trucks look, feel, and represent them.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Slate is looking for a curious, hands-on Intern, Interiors Engineering who's excited to see their work come to life inside a vehicle - not just on a screen. This is an opportunity for someone who wants real responsibility, real hardware, and real exposure to how vehicle interiors are designed, built, tested, and refined.

The ideal candidate is eager to learn, comfortable getting their hands dirty, and motivated by understanding how details like fit, finish, and craftsmanship directly influence customer perception. You enjoy solving problems at the system and component level, working with data to uncover root causes, and collaborating with engineers across disciplines to turn insights into action.

If you're someone who thrives in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment, values quality and precision, and wants to build a strong foundation in automotive interiors engineering, this role is designed for you.

WHAT YOU GET TO DO

  • Research and respectfully collaborate with cross-functional teams to create Polarion requirements for the Interior Cabin related to craftsmanship.

  • Ensure the Polarion requirements are added to the DVP&R at the system, sub-system, component, and material levels.

  • Assist in management of the "Meisterbock". The Meisterbock will be regularly used as the master fixture in support of pre-gran approvals and fit and finish requirements. It will be held at Slate's Troy office and then transferred to the Warsaw Production facility.

  • Gain firsthand practical experience in vehicle craftsmanship and Customer Perceived Quality through J.D. Power evaluations.

  • Create a report and present "Fit and Finish as it relates to the Consumer Perception of Craftsmanship Value."

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TEAM

  • Pursuit of a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related field.

  • Must be graduating between August 2026 and May 2029.

  • Must be able to work full-time (40 hours per week).

  • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

  • Demonstrated interest in automotive Interiors engineering , including fit, finish, and craftsmanship.

  • Demonstrated hands-on mechanical abilities, preferably in the automotive industry.

  • Highly adaptable and proactive.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve common goals.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Comfortable working in both laboratory and vehicle / plant environments.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have the ability to travel (up to 10%).

  • Must have the ability to lift up to 35 pounds.

  • Must have the ability to stand, walk, and perform repetitive tasks for extended periods.
