Overview:

The Application Engineering Manager is an experienced management and technical leader responsible for leading a team of technical delivery resources supporting cloud-based Microsoft Business Applications solutions. The role balances hands-on technical contribution with delivery leadership to ensure high-quality execution across complex, client-facing engagements. This position establishes and governs modern application engineering standards, drives delivery consistency and long-term technical health, and serves as a technical escalation point for delivery teams and clients. In addition, the role plans and manages team capacity and utilization, partners with leadership to align skills with evolving platforms, supports pre-sales and growth initiatives, and fosters strong, long-term client relationships through trusted technical leadership and disciplined execution.

Responsibilities:

Engineering Execution & Client Delivery

  • Serve as a hands-on technical contributor on complex, high-risk, or time-sensitive delivery efforts, flexing across teams as needed.
  • Perform advanced coding, integration, data migration, solution architecture, and deployment work to support delivery teams.
  • Design and govern environment strategies for complex deployments, including standards for development, testing, and production environments across the delivery lifecycle.
  • Translate solution designs into executable approaches and resolve technical risks that impact delivery quality or adherence to standards.
  • Provide engineering guidance and delivery estimates and communicate risks and tradeoffs in client discussions to reduce rework and technical debt.
  • Support long-term client relationships through sound technical leadership and consistent delivery execution.

Engineering Standards & Technical Health

  • Define and enforce modern development best practices and delivery discipline, including source control standards, quality gates, build and release discipline, and effective use of automation and AI.
  • Identify systemic technical issues and drive improvements to long-term technical health, including reducing rework and technical debt.
  • Own and govern internal Azure and application environments and co-development standards with clients, ensuring security, cost efficiency, and delivery consistency.
  • Contribute to growth initiatives, pre-sales efforts, and internal IP or product development through hands-on technical expertise.
  • Maintain sufficient solution and domain knowledge across core business applications and key industry verticals to support delivery and escalation needs.

Delivery Operations

  • Plan and manage capacity, resourcing, and utilization using demand and performance data to ensure delivery readiness, balanced workloads, and sustained productivity.
  • Partner with Technology Directors to align team capabilities with evolving technologies and delivery needs, ensuring practice-level technical readiness and continuity.
  • Serve as a technical escalation point for client issues, collaborating with Project and Technology leadership to ensure timely resolution.
  • Ensure consistent use of standardized tools, delivery practices, and internal standards to support predictable, high-quality delivery outcomes.
  • Monitor and manage both personal and team billable utilization, maintaining a target of 50%+ personal billable contribution while ensuring teams are appropriately staffed and engaged.

LMA - Leadership, Management, and Accountability:

  • Manage and mentor a team of professional services delivery resources across varied skillsets.
  • Participate in time entry and expense reporting review and approval process.
  • Lead professional development initiatives to ensure the team is staying relevant with the business applications, industry verticals, and program management best practices.
  • Lead performance management for team members as well as provide frequent informal feedback.
  • Participate in career growth and learning plans, performance reviews, and goal planning for team members.
  • Identify team member strengths and development areas; drive professional growth through coaching, training, and skill enhancement.
  • Participate in the recruiting process as well as rapidly onboard new team members.
  • Encourage and support employee engagement to enhance the success of Arctic IT.Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7+ years of experience in the IT industry, including hands-on application engineering, development, integration, and delivery within complex client environments.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering enterprise application solutions, with a strong emphasis on hands-on technical execution across custom development, integrations, data migration, testing, and deployment.
  • Experience supporting and reinforcing disciplined delivery practices, including backlog management, work item traceability, source control, CI/CD pipelines, and release management.
  • Experience designing and governing development, test, and production environments, ensuring solutions are secure, scalable, and supportable.
  • Demonstrated experience leading, mentoring, or managing technical delivery teams in a client-facing environment.
  • Relevant platform or solution certifications preferred but not required.
  • Valid driver's license and insurance.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: The majority of work for this role is performed in a home office and interacts with a wide variety of people with differing functions, personalities, and abilities. Telecommuters are expected to have sufficient home office space that appears neat, organized, and professional when on video meetings. Travel is required and varies around 25%.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The individual will be subject to sedentary work with the majority of hours in a professional office environment and will need to be able to quickly respond to a change in work demands. The individual is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as viewing a computer terminal. Occasionally lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects (1-40 lbs.) are required.
