USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service touches the lives of millions of people every day.  We are responsible for ensuring that the commercial supply of meat, poultry, and egg products moving in interstate commerce or exported to other countries is safe, wholesome, and correctly labeled and packaged.  Our public health goal is to help reduce foodborne illness from the products we regulate. 
 
FSIS is the largest food inspection workforce in the federal government with positions located throughout the United States.  Public health veterinarians help oversee the effectiveness of farm-to-table food safety systems, while scientific professionals protect the public by providing microbiological, pathological, chemical and other scientific analyses of meat, poultry, and egg products.
