Position Summary
Boys & Girls Harbor is seeking a certifed Preschool Teacher to provide a safe and nurturing environment that encourages physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development through a developmentally appropriate curriculum.
Position Responsibilities
1. Design and implement a developmentally appropriate preschool classroom environment
Implement a program of prescribed educational goals appropriate to the age and developmental level of the children
Plan and implement curricula units, lessons and activities to meet the physical, social and intellectual growth of the children such as storytelling, games, arts & craft, etc.
Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units and projects and communicate those objectives to the children
Ensure the classroom and curriculum meets the Harbor standards as well as defined governmental and/or program requirements
Ensure equipment and classroom are clean and safe at all times
Establish disciplinary policies and procedures for the classroom
Design the classroom (including furniture) to promote optimal program functioning
Plan the use of community resources to enrich the educational content of the children’s program
Observer and evaluate children’s performance, behavior and social development
2. Supervise children
Provide careful and concentrated supervision for play areas to insure children’s safety and learning
Ensure that all safety and health regulations are adhered to those described in Article 47
Ensure children are supervised at all times
Assist children with personal care as appropriate
Promote mutual respect and models problem solving skills
Be familiar with emergency and first aid procedures
3. Building Relationships with External and Internal Constituents
Develop a plan in which information concerning the children and program can be shared with external constituents (e.g. parent,) by classroom associates (e.g. Teacher, Teacher’s Aide, Assistant Teacher)
Attend and participate in group parent meetings
Discuss identified problems and needs with professionals as appropriate
Assist and provide professional advice to advance the development of classroom associates (e.g. Assistant Teacher, Teacher’s Aide) through regularly scheduled individual and/or group conferences. Encourage their attendance and participation in workshops and conferences
Maintain good working relationships and objective attitudes with team
4. Maintain Program Administration

Adhere to Harbor policies and procedures

Manage the daily functions of the Assistant Teacher and Teacher’s Aide

Ensure that mandated assessment of student data is completed and maintained in a timely and orderly manner

Assist with the development of individual student plans

Maintain current and confidentiality of student records
5. Perform other related tasks as assigned
Essential Skills and Qualifications
Hold a current and valid New York State Teacher’s Certification (or equivalent certificate from another state, which is recognized by the New York State Department of Education)
Bachelor’s degree, preferable in Early Childhood Education
Hold a current and valid Child Abuse Training certification
Hold a current and valid First Aid/CPR certification
Must be able to compliance with Article 47 and meet the requirements set by the agency
Two years group teacher’s experience plus academic course work pertinent to the appropriate age levels
Previous childcare work experience in a licensed facility
Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships, and sound educational program; to be articulate, pleasant and resourceful
Willingness to utilize any training available to improve administrative and supervisory skills
Preferred Skills and Qualifications
