JOB SUMMARY: 

Outstanding opportunity to develop and implement technical innovations for the manufacturing of physical vapor deposition targets predominantly used in data storage and semi-conductor applications. The position requires the use of fundamental melting, casting, and metal working metallurgical principles and clear concept of understanding powder metallurgy related to mechanical alloying, milling and consolidation in order to control and modify the intrinsic properties of the product for enhanced performance. The individual will design and implement experimental programs to achieve specific product characteristics with a continual emphasis on superior target sputtering performance and subsequent marketing advantages. Robust metallurgical manufacturing principles are to be applied toward process design with successful transfer to manufacturing operations.

                                     

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan and conduct activities relating to product development of PVD  target alloys for applications in the data storage, semi-conductor and other markets
  • Develop competitive thin film materials based on technical evaluation of current products offered in the global marketplace
  • Apply solid scientific understanding of material science and alloy metallurgy in the development of innovative products
  • Coordinate and transfer manufacturing processes for production of new materials
  • Respond to marketing input, providing goals, schedules and timely updates
  • Implement melting and casting methodologies to produce specialty materials as specified by market forces
  • Apply knowledge of metal working principles for shape transformation and control of metallurgical characteristics via thermo-mechanical processing
  • Specify material characterization methods, facilitate measurement activities and apply results toward process and product development
  • Maintain accurate and complete project records
  • Author technical conferences, trade shows, and educational courses to remain current in the field as it relates to existing and future technologies with the ability to present
  • Function as technical engineering resource to sales, marketing and manufacturing operations

 

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Five (5) to eight (8) years of experience in development and manufacturing related to casting and powder metallurgy based projects with a Ph.D. degree in Materials Science and Engineering or eight (8) to ten (10) years of experience in the above mentioned area with a M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering
  • Extensive knowledge preferred in manufacturing of PVD target materials
  • In depth understanding of materials science considerations involved for processing of binary, ternary, quaternary alloys and oxide phase systems
  • Knowledge of fundamental metal shaping processes
  • Process control experience in the manipulation of metallurgical properties by thermal-mechanical processing
  • Familiarity with project management and design of experiments
  • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision; must be self starter
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to function effectively with others
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

 

EDUCATION: Bachelor degree in a qualified technical field is required as a minimum along with at least 5 years of technical experience. Ph.D. in Materials Science or relevant engineering field with emphasis in Metallurgy is preferred.
