POSITION:                 TRUCK DRIVER (subject to DOT regulations)

REPORTS TO:         Dispatch/General Manager/President

 

SUMMARY:              Picks-up, transports and/or delivers various products, typically in trailer load quantities, by operating a van or flatbed tractor-trailer combination or other vehicle in accordance with all state and federal laws.  The position requires the performance of other tasks as assigned.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Operate a tractor-trailer truck over intercity routes and/or spanning several states
  • Work away from home for long periods at a time, as long as two or more weeks at a time 
  • Drive tractor trailer truck for 10 hours a day for multiple days in a row
  • Drive long distances (west Coast and/or Canada) and sleep in truck
  • Deliver and pick up goods to/from customers
  • Keep an electronic or paper log of activities
  • Load and unload cargo when necessary
  • Count cargo when necessary
  • Fuel equipment when necessary
  • Perform pre-trip inspection on tractor-trailer and reports any minor or major repairs needed
  • Report to a dispatcher any incidents encountered on the road
  • Follow accident procedures if an accident occurs
  • Monitor road conditions and watch for traffic congestion
  • Follow all applicable traffic laws
  • Receive and make communications via either cell phone, text, or email
  • Communicate directly with McMillan customers
  • Assist with some deliveries
  • Deliver to some job sites
  • Report serious mechanical problems to the appropriate personnel
  • Keep truck and associated equipment clean
  • Make delivery/pick up schedules as established by dispatch/company
  • Protect cargo and equipment from theft
  • Take rest periods during trip as required by Department of Transportation
  • Work under the direct supervision of the President, receive load and schedule information from Dispatch

 

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

·       Must be qualified to operate a tractor-trailer unit as on over-the-road driver in compliance with the Department of Transportation Regulations.

·       Possession of a valid driver’s license for two years (required) or Military experience driving truck with trailers

·       Possession of a valid commercial motor vehicle operator's license CDL-A (required)

·       The ability to read and write in English, and the ability to add and subtract whole numbers (required)

·       Submit a copy of certified Motor Vehicle Record that is 30 days or less old, or willing to sign authorization for McMillan Transport to obtain a copy (required)

·       Motor Vehicle Record must be clean (preferred)

·       Must be willing to authorize McMillan to obtain an FMCSA Pre-employment screening report on applicant (FMCSA PSP Program)

·       Two (2) years verifiable consecutive experience with similar equipment (required)

·       Must be at least 21 years of age as required by Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (required)

·       Applicant must be willing to take, and applicant must pass, an in-house driving test (required)

·       Comply with all Federal regulations, and all State regulations that are stricter than Federal requirements (required)

·       Must have only one(1) CDL-A driver's license issued by the State in which driver lives (required)

·       Be able to perform the job requirements listed in the table below (under Safety) at the percentages indicated.

·       No Felonies involving the use of a motor vehicle (required)

·       Employee will be part of a random drug testing pool (required)

·       All drivers must meet physical qualifications required by USDOT (required)

·       No more that 1 at fault accident in past 36 months

·       No major violations in past 36 months
