The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is the federal agency charged by Congress with investigating every civil aviation accident in the United States and significant accidents in other modes of transportation-highway, marine, pipeline, railroad, space, and transit, as well as accidents involving transportation of hazardous materials.  The NTSB publishes reports of investigations and issues safety recommendations aimed at preventing future accidents.
