The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan association representing highway and transportation departments in the fifty states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Its primary goal is to foster the development, operation, and maintenance of an integrated national transportation system. AASHTO is an international leader in setting technical standards for all phases of highway system development.
Established in 1965, AASHTO re:source is part of the Engineering and Technical Services division of AASHTO. The primary vision of AASHTO re:source is to be the center for promoting quality and achievement of excellence in construction materials testing (CMT). We do this by providing tools and services through our three major programs: the Laboratory Assessment Program (LAP), the Proficiency Sample Program (PSP), and AASHTO Accreditation Program (AAP). Through these activities, we evaluate testing competency, promote continual improvement, and instill confidence in the laboratories and specifies that use our programs.

AASHTO re:source (formerly AMRL) is seeking individuals for the position of Laboratory Assessor. The ideal candidate is interested in traveling extensively across the United States independently, has excellent oral and written communication skills, and has an aptitude for math and science. Laboratory assessors must be detail-oriented, energetic, and have a passion for learning. About the Position: AASHTO re:source offers on-site assessments of construction materials testing (CMT) laboratories located throughout all fifty states, Guam, Puerto Rico and Canada. Laboratory Assessors travel independently approximately 150 days per year in 2-3 week long periods. During these trips, assessors evaluate laboratories’ policies, testing procedures, equipment and personnel for compliance with applicable AASHTO and ASTM standards. This is a full-time position that places a strong emphasis on working independently. When not traveling, duties include trip planning, contacting laboratories, reviewing and submitting assessment reports, and assisting with other programmatic activities as needed. Construction materials currently included in the scope of our assessment program are asphalt, aggregate, soil, metals, sprayed fire-resistive material (SFRM), and pavement preservation. More Information: A Day in the Life of an Assessor Laboratory Assessor Training Program Job Requirements: Education Requirements: A four-year degree in science (geology, environmental, etc.) or engineering (civil, mechanical, industrial, materials, or environmental) is required. Equivalent and relevant CMT experience will be considered in lieu of the education requirement. No prior CMT knowledge or experience is required. Strong oral communication and technical writing skills are essential. Other requirements: Interested candidates must be able to travel independently approximately 150 days per year. A valid driver’s license from any state, a sound driving record, and the ability to drive up to 400 miles per day on occasion are also required for the position. Laboratory Assessors are expected to live within a reasonable commuting distance of  Frederick, Maryland . Located at the intersection of I-70 and I-270, Frederick, Maryland is approximately one hour from both Baltimore, MD and Washington D.C.  Upon hire, new employees must complete a rigorous six-month training program.
