KPBS Broadcast Engineer 

The mission of KPBS is to produce and distribute educational, cultural and informational public television, radio and web programming for the benefit of the San Diego community.  KPBS-TV/FM and KPBS.ORG also produce programs for regional and national distribution and engage in a number of related, non-broadcast, telecommunications activities. 
 
The Engineering /IT Department of KPBS is responsible for the technical facilities of the station(s) used in electronic media production, recording, and transmission.  The Department also lends occasional technical support to other San Diego State University areas as required.  There are currently six full time employees and two student assistants in the KPBS Engineering Department.
 

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The position of Broadcast Engineer will be part of a departmental team responsible for maintaining audio/video broadcasting, datacasting, and computer equipment used in the origination and reception of radio and television signals, and to insure that the transmissions adhere to applicable Federal Communication Commission regulations, industry standards and guidelines.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

  • Installs, operates, and maintains technical equipment throughout the KPBS radio and television facilities as required. 
  • On call  to respond to plant emergencies resulting from equipment or facilities failures.
  • Maintains inventory and repair records.
  • Completes documentation such as shift logs, equipment repair log, and single line wiring changes.
  • Makes purchase recommendations for equipment, components and supplies.
  • Operates and maintains various types of computers and multi-platform storage media arrays for on air automation and content production systems, to include Macintosh-based non-linear editing systems (such as Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premier).
  • Maintains accurate communication with Supervisors and co-workers to exchange information, concerns, receive assignments and collaborate on projects.
  • Operate KPBS Electronic News Gathering vehicle and maintain associated equipment.
 
The incumbent reports to the KPBS Senior Engineering Manager but must also be able to work independently and to exercise personal initiative in the performance of specified duties. At times, this position will require working odd hours due to the nature of KPBS broadcast operations.  May require driving station owned vehicles.  Position may require lifting and transporting heavy equipment, materials and supplies.
 

QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL SKILLS

 

This position is technical in nature, requiring a high degree of proficiency in electronics theory, and a sound working background in analog and digital processing and signals related to broadcast applications. The Broadcast Engineer must be able to respond quickly in identifying the source of malfunctions, and independently implementing appropriate corrective action.  The traditional telecommunications facility is changing dramatically, and as such the Broadcast Engineer will need to stay current with the changes from a single-signal origination plant to a multiple program stream computer data center. 
 
Candidates for this position should have working knowledge and experience with contemporary studio TV and/or radio broadcast facilities including remote broadcasting vehicle satellite systems.  In-depth knowledge of maintenance and repair of television, radio, and/or automation systems is essential.  The ability to effectively communicate and interact with others is also necessary for this position, while using initiative, judgment and discretion in carrying out responsibilities for the production and broadcast facilities.  The Broadcast Engineer should be able to remain calm under pressure and have reasonable expectations for the technical abilities non-engineering staff members working always to reduce tension while solving the problem at hand. 
 
Must have a thorough understanding of computer communications technologies, computer hardware diagnostics and repair experience. Specific knowledge of Microsoft, Apple OS-X, software and related HD non-linear editing production systems and media RAID centralized storage configurations is desirable. Related user and software support background and familiarity with Internet protocols is a plus.

  • Knowledge of live remote television broadcasting vehicle operations and setup.
  • Knowledge of satellite communications equipment.
 

Experience

  • The candidate must have three years of progressively responsible radio and /or television engineering or equivalent experience.
 

Education

  • College Degree in a related field or a combination of technical training and experience.
 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL SKILLS

  • A.S.E.E. degree or equivalent highly desirable.
  • SBE certification highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with Omneon video servers, Xendata archive and Avid/Sundance automation systems a plus.
  • Familiarity with Harris, Axia Audio and Enco Automation systems a plus.
  • Newsroom information systems experience, such as AP/ENPS a plus.
  • Television and Radio Transmitter maintenance experience a plus.
