The Client

The Plasma Protein Therapeutics Association (PPTA) is a dynamic trade association that represents over 500 human plasma collection centers in the North America and Europe, as well as the manufacturers of life saving plasma protein therapies. The association’s members produce approximately 80% of the plasma protein therapies in the U.S. and Europe.
 
PPTA works globally to advocate for access to and affordability of therapies for patients; engages in constructive dialogue with regulatory agencies and collaborates with more than 20 patient advocacy organizations. The association also administers standards programs that help ensure the quality and safety of plasma collection and manufacturing, protecting both donors and patients.

Position Summary
The Medical Director serves as the primary source of medical/clinical expertise for PPTA, building collaborative professional relationships with staff and all external stakeholders. The successful candidate will provide clinical guidance to staff and a wide variety of member-company and industry stakeholders on issues related to PPTA’s primary activities. The association places key emphasis on maintaining the health and safety of plasma donors and also recipients of plasma protein therapies; the implications and issues related to plasma donation; and the efficacy of the therapies. 

Principal Responsibilities
  • Evaluate medical/clinical implications of research data related to plasma donor health and safety, as well as the efficacy of plasma protein therapeutics.
  • Communicate with volunteer leadership of member companies, industry leaders, regulatory officials and other stakeholders regarding relevant clinical issues.
  • Attend and report on industry meetings regarding clinical aspects of plasma donation, safety and efficacy of plasma protein therapies and related areas.
  • Work closely with PPTA staff to develop effective communications on issues of importance to stakeholders such as members, legislative and regulatory authorities, the press and the general public.
  • Participate on PPTA staff committees and in internal meetings to provide clinical information and guidance.
  • Contribute and communicate medical/science-based expertise via position papers, articles in peer reviewed journals and other pertinent publications; also via recommendations and presentations to various audiences.
  • Contribute clinical/scientific expertise to the development of responses to regulatory and legislative authorities, as well as the development of voluntary standards related to donor health and safety and product safety.
  • Provide medical input on discussions related to Health Technology Assessments. 
Qualifications
  • M.D. from accredited university in Internal Medicine, Hematology, Infectious Disease, Immunology or related specialty.
  • 5-10 years’ experience in clinical medicine
  • Experience in the pharmaceutical industry and/or as a Clinical Research Officer; clinical research experience in an academic institution may substitute.
  • Experience in plasma protein therapeutics industry or with clinical trials related to biological products is desirable.
  • Trade association experience a plus.
  • Working knowledge of key healthcare industry issues and reimbursement processes a plus.
  • Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to navigate both inside and outside the association in a non-hierarchical, collaborative style.
  • Able to work with all levels of PPTA staff in team-oriented, matrixed environment.
  • Excellent English language skills, both oral and written, are required; additional language skills helpful.
  • Highly developed critical/analytical thinking skills.
