Volkert Origins

Volkert is a trusted name in the infrastructure industry - but how did it come to be? New Orleans, Louisiana is the birthplace of Volkert, Inc. who was then known as Doullut & Ewin, a family-run engineering firm back in 1925. As early as the 1920's the company has been providing ambitious and avantgarde engineering and construction services. The firm has take on airport design services as early as 1927. As a matter of fact, during World War II, the company designed and constructed the U.S. Navy shipyards to facilitate the production of "Liberty Ships", dry docks, and self-operating steel and wood docks to help the war.

Eventually, in the fifties, the company changed its name to Ewin Engineering and moved to Mobile, Alabama where it met its future leader: David G. Volkert. It was this enterprising engineer who led the firm's involvement in the design of the U.S. interstate highway system, the largest civil engineering project in history, in nine (9) southeastern states and the District of Columbia. After acquisition in 1963, the firm got its final name, Volkert, Inc., and received a more-focused goal of "serving clients with quality, innovation and honest value." From then on, the company soared even higher covering transportation, aviation, construction, public works and utilities, property acquisition, and environmental engineering projects for both public and private entities.

One of the firm's most significant project of the 20th century include the magnificent design feat of Lake Pontchartrain Causeway -- the longest continuous bridge over water not only in the United States but also of the entire world. It consists of two parallel bridges spanning New Orleans up to Lake Pontchartrain in southern Louisiana.

Volkert Future

At present, Volkert employs over 1,200 professionals in their more than 50 offices but aside from employment growth, what lies ahead for Volkert and its team members?

Consistently performing, Volkert is nowhere near its goal yet. Innovation is part of Volkert's principles. The company wouldn't have stayed in the business for almost a century if it hadn't pushed the boundaries of engineering and/or hadn't been molded by innovation. It not only went with the tide but it dictated how the tides will turn. Even up to now, commuters benefit from their old yet still relevant and ever functioning interstate projects.

This leaves no room for doubt as to why Volkert has been consistently awarded as part of the top design firms all over the country. Their commitment to excellence has been in the company's goals since David Volkert's acquisition. Remember their slogan? Serving clients with quality, innovation and honest value.

Furthermore, the firm is driven by sustainability. It plans to continue on for another century; hence dedicating their work to providing not only quality and innovative services but also sustainable design and infrastructure solutions. Their business language is not just to build, build, build but more importantly to build and rebuild sustainably. There will be no one to serve and nowhere to build if the environment is not preserved in the present time. The ultimate Volkert goal is to deliver the future of infrastructure.
