The Military Sealift Command (MSC) is the premier provider of ocean transportation to the Department of Defense. The MSC plays a critical role in supporting the nation's defense but their employees are not active duty members of the military. The largest segment of its global workforce are federal civil service employees, known also as MSC civil service mariners (CIVMARs).
The MSC's mission is big and so are its rewards for the successful CIVMAR candidates. Be sure to check SIGN-ON BONUS when you visit MSC's HireVeterans profile to take advantage of their recruitment incentive programs!
Working for the federal government does not only equate to job security but also (more often than not) to an above average salary and excellent benefits!
Formerly known as Military Sea Transportation Service (MSTS), Military Sealift Command was founded in 1949 to consolidate shipment of military supplies from the four separate services (Navy’s Fleet Support Services, the Naval Transportation Service, the Army Transport Service, and the U.S. Maritime Commission’s War Shipping Administration) used during World War II into a unified command.
The Command now operates approximately 125 civilian-crewed ships that replenish U.S. Navy ships, conduct specialized missions, strategically preposition combat cargo at sea around the world and move military cargo and supplies used by deployed U.S. forces and coalition partners.
MSC exists to support the joint warfighter across the full spectrum of military operations. It provides on-time logistics, strategic sealift, as well as specialized missions anywhere in the world, in contested or uncontested environments.
Veterans' Preference
MSC's hiring process awards preference to eligible veterans over non-veteran applicants. With veterans’ preference, a veteran with 10-point preference may apply for any position that the MSC hires externally.
A veteran with marine or navy experience might normally want to transition to MSC because of their service backgrounds. As such, MSC allows military time/sea service as qualifying advantages for higher-level merchant mariner’s ratings.
MSC mainly welcomes transitioning military, merchant marines, maritime academy graduates, and skilled entry-level candidates to fill their maritime job opportunities. All CIVMARs are employed by the Navy to serve onboard naval auxiliaries and hybrid-manned warships worldwide, in times of both peace and war.
