CAMP INSTRUCTOR (PART-TIME) Town of Christiansburg Department of Parks and Recreation Code 610
JOB SUMMARY Instructors are responsible for organizing and planning specialized recreational classes/programs. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Plan and actively take part with participants in the specified recreational program • Oversee all activities to ensure the protection and safety of participants • Organize and plan recreational activities for the age range that is specified in class/program • Supervise 10-40 participants per clinic • Deal effectively with participants • Follow verbal and written instructions and adhere to Recreation Program Policies • Maintain order, enforce rules and follow discipline procedures • Enthusiastic and motivated • Excellent verbal communication skills to be able to give instructions to participants • Instructor must be knowledgeable on the subject/program they are teaching/Instructing. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT • Supplies required for the planned recreation program WORK CONTEXT Instructor will work 2-4 hour sessions, 4-5 times in a week. In some cases schedule can be worked with. Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions. WORK PERFORMANCE The Instructor is required to follow departmental expectations and adhere to all rules, regulations, policies and procedures in the Town of Christiansburg Personnel Handbook. Work performance is reviewed utilizing the Town’s employee performance review program following first 6 month probationary period. During this probationary period, the employee must demonstrate a strong understanding of all that the job requires. JOB QUALIFICATIONS Education and experience • High school diploma or GED equivalent; supplemented by a minimum of one (1) year of experience in teaching/ instructing classes, preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age Licenses and Certification • Valid, Virginia driver’s license with the ability to meet/maintain Town insurability requirements, preferred KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Upon Hire • Effective verbal communication skills • Ability to maintain professional and courteous relationships with internal and external customers, vendors and staff • Well -developed interpersonal skills • Basic math skills with the ability to add/subtract/multiply/divide; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; utilize principles of fractions and interpret graphs • The ability to operate , maneuver, and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and /or materials used in performing essential functions • Ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and/or analyze data; exercise discretion in determining data classification, and in referencing such analysis to established standards for the purpose of recognizing actual or probable interactive effects and relationships • Ability to apply principles of personal persuasion and/or influence over others in coordinating activities of a project, program, or designated area of responsibility • Apply principles of rational systems; interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives • Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria • Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information • Ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals; some tasks require the ability to communicate orally SAFETY The employee shall adhere to Town of Christiansburg policies regarding safety precautions and the use of safety equipment that is necessary for the health and safety of all employees and citizens.
