PART-TIME FIELD/PARK MAINTENANCE Town of Christiansburg Department of Parks and Recreation Code 611 JOB SUMMARY Under the direct supervision of the Director of Parks and Recreation, the Field Maintenance position is responsible for performing various semi-skilled maintenance, landscaping, and construction tasks in the Town’s parks, playing fields, and recreational facilities. WORK ACTIVITIES Primary Duties • Performs a variety of landscaping duties (i.e. mows grass, plants flowers and shrubs, weed eats around signs and fence lines, edges curb lines, clears leaves, trees limbs and other debris from park areas; spreads and hauls ground cover, dirt, or mulch; sprays weed killer and fertilizer; prunes trees and shrubs; weeds flower beds; aerates and spreads grass seed; services irrigations systems; grooms ball fields; removes snow and ice, etc.). • Performs installation, maintenance, and upkeep tasks for various parks, facilities, courts, fencing, and other structures • Performs general construction • Repairs and maintains parks or other public facilities • Pick up trash and empty trash cans • Repairs sports equipment (i.e. basketball goals and tennis court nets) • Paints interiors/exteriors • Cleans and restocks park restrooms (i.e. cleans floors, etc.) • Assists with special projects and seasonal work • Maintains ball fields • Installs and removes holiday decorations, and banners • Clears parks areas of debris following special events • Removes and replaces staging materials from sites as needed • Maintains inventory of equipment, parts, supplies • Performs routine safety inspections on equipment; advises supervisor of needed repairs • Prepares or completes various forms, reports, work orders, logs, accident reports, inspection reports, or other documents • Receives various forms, reports, work orders, application instructions or other documents; reviews, completes, processes, forwards, or retains as appropriate • Consults with assigned staff, assists with complex/problem situations, provided information, researches problems, and initiates problem resolution • Maintains a comprehensive current knowledge of applicable policies, procedures, codes, and regulations; maintains an awareness of applications, methods, trends, equipment, and advances in parks maintenance and attends conferences, workshops, and training sessions as appropriate • Operates a variety of equipment and machinery to complete tasks • Performs other related duties as required TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT • Tractor • Finish mower • Trimmer • Blower • Sprayer • Spreader • Pole Saw • Snow Blower • Ball Field Striper • Chalker • Power Saw • Hand Saw • Drill • Power Tools • Hand Tools (e.g. hammer, screwdriver) • Bull Float • Pickup/Dump Truck • Salt Spreader • Hand Spreader • Golf Cart • Utility Vehicle • Computer • Vacuum • Floor buffer/stripping machine • Mops/brooms • Trash Can • Cleaning products • Shovel JOB CONTEXT The Field/Park Maintenance position works a varied schedule 20-25 hours a week from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., some evening and weekend work as workload and circumstances dictate, with one-hour lunch. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, wildlife, or rude/irate customers. Tasks require the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds). WORK PERFORMANCE The Field/Park Maintenance position is required to follow departmental expectations and adhere to all rules, regulations, policies and procedures in the Town of Christiansburg Personnel Handbook. During this probationary period, the Parks Maintenance for Parks and Recreation must demonstrate a strong understanding of all that the job requires. JOB QUALIFICATIONS Education and experience • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent; supplemented by two (2) years of experience in maintenance, landscaping, custodial or construction; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Licenses and Certification • Valid, Virginia driver’s license with the ability to meet/maintain Town insurability requirements KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge: Upon Hire • Various cleaning methods • Various cleaning equipment • Basic Maintenance After Hire • Areas required to clean • Town personnel policies Skills and Abilities: Upon Hire • Perform manual tasks requiring moderate physical strength • Operate mechanical cleaning equipment (i.e. stripper/buffer) • Read basic operating instructions and cleaning supply labels • Perform duties independent of instruction • Ability to operate and control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and/or rapid adjustments • Ability to exchange information for the purpose of clarifying details within well-established policies, procedures and standards • Basic math skills with the ability to add/subtract/multiply/divide; calculate decimals and percentages; utilize the principles of fractions and interpret graphs • Ability to determine, calculate tabulate, or summarize data/information, including performing subsequent actions in relation to these computational operations • Ability to carry out instruction furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form; involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action • Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information • Ability to exchange information for the purpose of clarifying details within well -established policies, procedures, and standards • Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria • Ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals; some tasks require the ability to communicate orally After Hire • Stripping and finishing floors SAFETY The employee shall adhere to Town of Christiansburg policies regarding safety precautions and the use of safety equipment that is necessary for the health and safety of all employees and citizens.
