The Division of Disability Determination (DDD), a division of Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD), in agreement with the Social Security Administration (SSA), is looking for Disability Claims Adjudicators to assist in determining eligibility for Ohioans who apply for Social Security disability benefits.
What is a Disability Claims Adjudicator and what do they do?
A State of Ohio Employee who considers medical and vocational information to process Social Security disability determination claims for Ohioans.
Completes job-related training, which prepares them to effectively gather and analyze information from various sources to include medical, psychological, and functional evidence in determining one’s work-related limitations.
Interacts frequently with claimants, attorneys, medical sources and other professionals to obtain evidence used to evaluate the severity of medical conditions and a claimant’s ability to perform work-related activities.
A successful Disability Claims Adjudicator:

Completion of undergraduate core program in human/medical services area (e.g. psychology, sociology, criminology, pre-medicine, special education), public relations, public administration, business administration, communications or closely related field.
-Or 24 mos. exp. in adjudication of Social Security disability benefit claims for another state jurisdiction or federal component of social security administration.
-Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.
Knowledge of: disability claim development procedures; social security law, structure, procedures & regulations, program operations manual*, HIPAA*; vocational rules; general psychology; natural & physical sciences (e.g., biology, anatomy, physiology); abnormal psychology; psychological testing & measurement; behavior & human motivation assessment; personality theories; sociology; body systems/functions & disorders*; diseases & disabling conditions*; economic & vocational analysis; clinical & laboratory procedures; human relations; interviewing techniques; adjudicative practices, procedures & methods; relevant court decisions.
Skill in: operation of office equipment, computer applications & related software*, problem solving & decision making, comprehension, interpretation & analysis of technical, medical & vocational data & reports, critical thinking. Ability to: interpret variety of complex laws, regulations, guidelines & technical material in social security program, medical reports & disability claims; maintain high level of accuracy while handling a constantly fluctuating workload; multi-task variety of facts & functions with frequent interruptions; identify discrepancies, investigate issues & use proper research methods in gathering data; gather, collate & classify information about data, people or things; work efficiently & accurately, maintain composure & flexibility under pressure, challenging conditions & job related stress; communicate effectively by telephone, e-mail & fax with all levels of government structure, medical professionals, community, attorneys & individuals with disabilities in vulnerable situations &/or in crisis; handle sensitive inquiries from & contacts with general public, work independently.

Assessment Process: These positions are filled through a computer-based test and a structured interview. All parts of the assessment are administered at 400 E. Campus View Boulevard, Columbus, OH 43235. The computer-based test is a timed exercise using a computer, monitor, mouse and keyboard. Applicants selected for the assessment will be notified to self-schedule through the Ohio Hiring Management System.
Those applicants who successfully complete and pass the computer-based test will be eligible to interview.

Background Check Information
The final candidates selected for these positions will be required to undergo a criminal background check. Criminal convictions do not necessarily preclude an applicant from consideration for a position. An individual assessment of an applicant's prior criminal convictions will be made before excluding an applicant from consideration.
Individuals selected for positions with Ohio's Disability Determination Service (DDS) will go through a complete Federal background investigation. A suitability determination by the Social Security Administration is necessary to determine whether an employee can be issued credentials in order to have access to Social Security disability data, records, and systems. Finalists must pass a preliminary check prior to a job offer being made. A full background investigation will follow. Further details will be provided during the interview process.
