AUTOMATED LITIGATION SUPPORT / PARALEGAL Provides a range of legal support services to one or more Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) involved in criminal and civil prosecutions, and grand jury investigations. Serves as the primary support specialist for discovery in criminal and civil cases in compliance with the Federal Rules of Procedure, the United States Code, and local district rules and regulations. Assists AUSAs in developing strategies for the collection and utilization of discovery. MAJOR DUTIES Provides technical assistance to AUSAs in facilitating the management of incoming and outgoing document discovery in accordance with the district's policies & procedures. Assists AUSAs and legal support staff in gathering, organizing, and processing voluminous case information for efficient retrieval through automated means such as scanning, indexing and organizing documents in a database. Ensures documents are organized and processed for efficient automated storage, search and retrieval by converting images for full-text retrieval, developing logical schemes for coding documents, linking and cross-referencing documents, etc. with a thorough understanding of the case and the legal issues specified by AUSAs Compiles outgoing discovery in compliance with the Federal Rules of Procedure, United States Code, Local Rules, and in accordance with stipulations and/or court orders. Works with agency partners to facilitate production of discovery in a timely and effective manner. Assists AUSAs choosing the particular formats in which ESI should be produced by opposing parties and recommends the formats in which the government should produce information as discovery for opposing parties. Identifies and utilizes the optimal software application for the compilation, analysis and presentation of evidence, such as Concordance, iConnect, IPRO Tech, CaseMap, TimeMap, PowerPoint and Sanction, based upon the platforms effectiveness. Assists AUSAs in developing the most effective trial presentations using the Lit Tech resources available in the USAO. 2. Utilizesa variety of Litigation Technical Support software applications to locate, organize, analyze, characterize and present information that is pertinent to the government's position in the case. * Works with AUSAs, paralegals, and other members of the litigation team to recommend the most effective ALS strategy to meet litigation needs early in the case. * Encourages the use of Lit Tech for trial preparation and presentation in light of case characteristics. * In conjunction with assigned attorneys, helps to organize, log, and retain discovery information so it is easily, timely, and accurately produced to opposing counsel. * Creates and maintains discovery production logs to memorialize the date, time, and materials provided to opposing counsel. Works with the Criminal and Civil Chiefs regarding district policies for the dissemination of discovery materials are uniformly being followed throughout the district. * In coordination with the IT Staff, assists AUSA's in the usage of a variety of computer hardware such as printers, plotters, audio-visual devices, and other state-of-the-art equipment to conceptualize exhibits and complete special presentation projects. . 3. Other case support activities. Works with AUSAs, the District's grand jury coordinator, and other litigation support personnel to ensure all requested materials have been received, retained, and produced as required by the Federal Rules of Procedure, United States Code, and applicable local rules. * Works with the District's Lit Tech staff and other litigation support personnel as requested. * Serves as the initial District Point of Contact for opposing counsel regarding any issues related with the viewing of discovery that has been produced. * Maintains the log of all tax related documents received in the USAO in connection with pending litigation. Performs other duties as assigned. * Knowledge of the capabilities and use of automated resources and technology for the development, presentation, and prosecution of federal cases * Knowledge of the principles, concepts, and methods of legal research and analysis sufficient to perform assigned case development and documentation assignments which are typically covered by established precedents * Excellent written and oral communication skills, analytic ability, and thorough knowledge of legal research tools Hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases, spreadsheets, and telecommunications equipment This position requires U.S. Citizenship and a 7 (or 10) year minimum background investigation.
