Research Specialist
The position will perform daily research duties to include:   data collection, record keeping, feed system monitoring and care for research animals. Additional responsibilities may be assigned on an as-needed basis.   Supervisory Authority: Responsibility for personnel within their department Essential Job Responsibilities:   Works daily on research farm(s) located in Garland, NC and Rose Hill, NC. Works weekends required as scheduled. Learns and demonstrates capability/knowledge to operate and maintain feed systems including daily monitoring along with performing routine maintenance. Learns and demonstrates knowledge and ability to operate and maintain all research equipment including but not limited to: scales, specialized ventilation/data controllers, and water treatment systems. Must demonstrate independent problem-solving skills. Plans and schedules all research events.   Prepares for upcoming trials and research processes. Schedules feed, trucks, and orders routine supplies. Prepares payroll and monitors research expenses. Responsible for being in compliance with all environmental laws and procedures to which Smithfield subscribes. Follow the safety requirements of the Injury Prevention System (IPS). Learn, understand, and implement all policies and procedures that relate to Bio-security. Abide by all company policies, procedures and guidelines. Follow the Company’s animal welfare policies and procedures including:   providing a physical environment that meets the animal’s needs, providing access to adequate water and high quality feed, providing humane treatment of the animals, providing identification and appropriate treatment of animals in need of health care and following the guidelines for euthanasia. Responsible for being in compliance with all environmental laws and procedures. Report all environmental issues immediately to their supervisor.
