WSP, an award‑winning and innovative multidisciplinary engineering and consulting firm, is looking for a Sustainability Intern to join Built Ecology, our growing sustainability and high-performance consulting team in our Chicago, IL Office.
Built Ecology provides a broad range of services including sustainability consulting, high-performance design and analysis, building and master plan certification, sustainability master planning, resiliency and integrated design management. Built Ecology has been directly responsible for driving many globally leading projects, including LEED Platinum buildings, Living Building/Community Challenge buildings and institutional campuses, WELL Building Standard commercial buildings and interiors, restorative (net positive energy, water and waste) projects, EcoDistricts, etc. Our solutions are innovative, integrated, practical and economical.
Internship Terms: Winter, Spring, and/or Summer 2020
Ideal candidates will exhibit the following characteristics:
Passionate about creating a sustainable built environment
Driven to create solutions that deliver ambitious high-performance design outcomes
Background in sustainability, building design, and high-performance design analytics
Strong verbal, written, and graphic communication
Duties and Responsibilities:
Individual and team tasks within ongoing projects including LEED management, research, healthy design, energy modeling and analysis, daylight modeling, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis, renewable energy and battery storage, and cost-benefit analysis for these areas of study
Leadership and presentation of analysis related to assigned technical tasks in both written and oral format to both internal and external audiences
Write reports detailing analysis activities and design advice
Minimum Qualifications and Experience:
Pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in a building design related discipline that could include: Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Architecture, Building Science or similar
Familiarity with MS Office Suite
Knowledge of building rating systems (LEED, WELL, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
Ability to independently read and interpret architectural and engineering drawings
Familiarity with IECC and ASHRAE requirements and energy modeling protocols
Capability to produce documents with CAD and REVIT platforms
Knowledge of mechanical system architecture and components
Experience with OpenStudio, EnergyPlus, IES-VE, or eQuest
LEED Green Associate or AP
Scripting skills, e.g. Python, Grasshopper, Ruby, C#
