The WSP Hydropower Team of civil/structural, geotechnical and hydraulic engineers provides services on a wide range of projects including dams and appurtenant structures, levees, gates, penstocks, powerhouses, instrumentation monitoring and evaluation, and licensing/permitting.
WSP is currently initiating a search for a Junior Level Engineer for the Hydropower Team in our Portland, Oregon office. The Junior Engineer will perform technical tasks, interact directly with clients, potential clients and participate in industry events. While the candidate will primarily be responsible for projects related to hydropower and water retaining structures, some workload will be dedicated to other types of energy projects (offshore wind, solar, traditional thermal generation and underground hydrocarbon storage). Our ideal candidate has dam engineering experience with a strong background in the fields of civil/structural, geotechnical or hydraulic engineering.
Duties and Responsibilities
Produce hydraulic, geotechnical or structural calculations, design drawings and documents, project standards and specifications
Perform field inspections with senior hydropower engineers, including routine dam safety inspections, construction quality assurance and construction progress documentation
Develop quantity take-offs, engineering cost estimates for projects involving hydraulic structures
Perform dam safety inspections and prepare reports in conformance with state or federal regulatory guidelines
Review and supervise preparation of design calculations, modeling studies, drawings, reports, project standards and specifications
Assist in proposal development, manage, execute and provide technical support on a variety of water-related as well as interdisciplinary projects
Communicate with clients and regulators, establish goals and objectives for project teams, and schedule and coordinate resources to deliver projects on time, within budget, and to the performance expectations of the client
Promote Hydropower team capabilities by presenting and attending meeting and conferences
Apply regulatory knowledge with FERC, USACE, FEMA, USBR, and other local, state and federal agencies and regulators
The candidate must be willing to participate in domestic and international travel, when necessary
Bachelor’s degree in Civil and/or Structural Engineering, or related field
5+ years of experience, preferably with at least 3 years of related experience in dam engineering
Demonstrated experience with dam stability analysis, seismicity issues, flood hydrology, geotechnical knowledge, dam monitoring and instrumentation, dam operations, and risk assessment preferred
Strong organizational skills, and the ability to multi-task, prioritize, take direction, and provide direction to others
Strong communication and interpersonal skills (verbal/written/presentation)
Ability to travel occasionally for business (approximately 10 – 25%)
Possess strong analytical, collaborative and technical skills
Possess strong verbal and written communication skills
Possess a high level of energy and enthusiasm
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
PE License, or ability to obtain within 12 months
Experience with AutoCAD & Civil 3D, MicroStation and/or ArcGIS software
Familiarity with HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, GeoSlope, ANSYS and/or STADD is a plus
