ADULT/YOUTH BASKETBALL OFFICIAL (Part-Time) Town of Christiansburg Parks and Recreation JOB SUMMARY Under the direction of the Supervisor of Adult Athletic Programs and Adult Special Events, the Basketball Official is responsible for controlling our Adult athletic Leagues and possibly our youth leagues on occasion. The Basketball Official will be expected to use their knowledge and skills to promote an even playing field, and good competition while also maintaining the safety of all participants. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Interact with both Youth and Adults • Know when/how to deal with each group effectively in order to maintain control of our leagues • Know the rules of the sport being officiated as well as any additions to them that may be in place as a local league TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT • Appropriate attire suited to each sport JOB CONTEXT As an Official, the opportunity exists to work 2-3 week nights per week. In most cases, you will work at least 3 games per night. The work should be considered moderately stressful. Work is performed inside in a climate controlled environment. WORK PERFORMANCE The Basketball Official is required to follow departmental expectations and adhere to all rules, regulations, policies and procedures in the Town of Christiansburg Personnel Handbook. JOB REQUIREMENTS Experience • Knowledge of various sports/rules/regulations; experience preferred Licenses/Certifications • VHSL Certification preferred, not mandatory KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Ability to: • Demonstrate excellent leadership, conduct self in accordance with the highest integrity and appropriate responsible behavior at all times • Exert patience and self-control; be enthusiastic and dependable • Be flexible, work well with others and follow and provide direction • Maintain open and effective communication and work with a variety of age and skill levels • Must be able to interact with others in a respectful manner PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS • Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds (balls, nets, etc.); extensive standing, running SAFETY The employee shall adhere to Town of Christiansburg policies regarding safety precautions and the use of safety equipment that are necessary for the health and safety of all employees. If a safety concern arises, the employee must stop any life-threatening problem immediately and inform the employee’s supervisor.
