The Research Foundation's (RF) Information Technology Services (ITS) Database Administration (DBA) team is responsible for supporting business applications, processes, and tools that support the State University of New York (SUNY) research administration's strategic vision and goals in areas of student opportunity, Research & Development investment, entrepreneurship, technology commercialization, and industry engagement. The Associate Application Database Engineer is required to monitor and support production applications and provide support to the Application Development, Business Analyst, Data Services, Operations, and Quality Assurance teams to support and extend the functionality of our business applications through our DevOps and Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC). The incumbent will work under the general supervision of the Manager DBA and/or the Senior Application Database Engineer.


Production Support- This individual provides support for production business applications including planned maintenance for patching and/or configuration changes, unplanned outages during standard work hours and during the processing of our nightly schedule, and troubleshooting incidents reported by the DBA team monitoring processes and/or ITS team contact. The incumbent will perform the following:

• Respond quickly to production defects to assess criticality and restore applications and/or functions within agreed Service Level Agreements (SLA).
• Escalate critical incidents to the Senior Application Database Engineer, Manager DBA Team, and/or ITS Leadership team as appropriate.
• Available for on-call or after-hours support, as scheduled.
• Perform maintenance to production applications and databases to ensure security, accessibility, and availability requirements are met.
• Perform production patching and migrations in accordance with the Change Control process.

DevOps - This individual will support the Application Database Administration team's role in implementing process improvements and project initiatives. They will also support the Business Analysts and Application Development teams responsible for the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), supporting and enhancing business application capabilities. The incumbent will perform the following:

• Identify and recommend technology solutions that support a continuous improvement model, ensuring ITS services are provided effectively and efficiently.
• Document, test, and deploy technology implementations, patches, and upgrades in an effective, efficient, and secure manner.
• Develop and maintain technical documentation to aid in future deployment, production support, and troubleshooting defects.
• Adhere to Change Control policies and procedures to prevent unplanned outages.

Under the general supervision of a Senior Application Database Engineer, the incumbent will perform the following:

• Responsible for the installation, configuration, and support of business applications including, Oracle Database, its components, and management tools.
• Develop and support monitoring scripts, routines, and Third-Party tools to support and maintain the business applications, Oracle Database, and supporting environments.
• Monitor and maintain the business applications, Oracle Database, and its supporting components to optimize performance and resource availability.
• Apply and configure vendor supplied product maintenance, patches, and upgrades in a methodical and consistent manner to maximize availability, stability, and, currency with vendor supported versions and release levels.
• Comply with all supporting change control and problem management policies and procedures.
• Working off-hours and on a rotating on-call schedule is required.



• Must be able to troubleshoot complex applications, integrations, and/or environments, to resolve detected or reported incidents in production and development environments.
• Must demonstrate the ability to organize and plan tasks; the ability to communicate effectively both written and verbally; the ability to evaluate and implement software into the work environment.
• A familiarity with Oracle Database 19c and/or above is preferred.
• Knowledge of Oracle E-Business suite 12.2 is preferred.
• Knowledge of Appworx or similar job scheduling applications is preferred.
• Knowledge of Linux operating systems is preferred.


Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems (MIS), or comparable field and 1-2 years of experience supporting or developing a relational database. Employees at this level are competent to work on most phases of database administration requiring limited instruction and guidance on certain phases.

Compensation for this position: The compensation for this role is between $63,927 to $75,792. The pay will depend on a variety of factors that may include but are not limited to experience, education, training, and certifications.
