EVENT LEADER – Program Coordinator Town of Christiansburg Aquatics Department Class Code 784
JOB SUMMARY The Event Leader leads and assists in all aspects of programming- from swim lessons to fitness classes and summer camp. This position serves as the primary point of contact for customer service. The Event Leader works directly under the supervision of the Program Coordinator.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Leads and supervises programs in the absence of the Program Coordinator • Picks up supplies, as needed • Leads and assists with scheduling and supervision of swim lessons- both group and private • Assists with fitness classes and equipment as needed • Assists with clean-up and breakdown at completion of programs • Assists with check-in and payment of programs Occasional Duties • Performs other duties as assigned by Program Coordinator or Director of Aquatics.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT • Vehicle • Swim lesson equipment: noodles, rings, bath toys, etc. • Fitness equipment: noodles, weights, aqua belts etc. • Cleaning supplies
JOB CONTEXT 98% of the job duties are performed indoor at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. The Event Leader is a part-time position and the hours will vary weekly.
WORK PERFORMANCE The Event Leader is required to follow departmental expectations and adhere to all rules, regulations, policies, and procedures in the Town of Christiansburg Personnel Handbook.
JOB REQUIREMENTS Experience • Must be knowledgeable in the field of aquatics and have prior experience in swim lessons and customer service.
Certifications/Licenses • Eligible to work in accordance with Department of Labor standards • Valid Virginia Driver’s license; must meet and maintain insurability requirements • Valid American Red Cross First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer and AED Certification (must obtain within 6 months of hire) • WSI preferred but not mandatory (can be obtained at a later date)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of: • Community recreation as related to aquatics, including accepted standards, principles, and concepts • General principles in providing effective customer service
Ability to: • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees, customers, and the general public • Enforce rules in a tactful and effective manner with courtesy • Work responsibly with latitude for independent judgment to complete daily activities according to schedule • Multi-task and handle high volume of demands and service requests received each day Skilled in: • Effective communication methods, verbal and written, to a wide variety of staff and customers • Customer service and First aid
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS • Must be able to walk/crawl/sit/stand/climb/stoop/bend/kneel for extended periods of time • Must be able to lift/carry/manipulate loads up to 20 pounds

If a safety concern arises, the employee must stop any life-threatening problem immediately and in other cases immediately inform the employee’s supervisor.
