Title: Certified Nursing Assistant

Job Summary :
Vighter is recruiting Certified Nursing Assistants to support the Department of Health and Human Services at State Hospitals, State Supported Living Centers, and State Psychiatric Centers throughout Texas. Nurses may serve in temporary, short-term, and long-term positions depending on the needs of the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) facility. Vighter is contracted to provide staffing services to HHSC and receives requests for nurses periodically. When Vighter receives a request from the State of Texas our recruiters contact candidates in our database to confirm availability, willingness, and interest in the position. Candidate resumes are then sent to HHSC for review and interview scheduling. Nursing assistants must apply in order to be considered for this position.

The HSCS is comprised of nine hospitals located throughout the state, and one youth residential psychiatric center in Waco. The HSCS is a hub of excellence for forensic mental health and complex psychiatric care, with all facilities accredited by The Joint Commission. The hospitals provide state-of-the-art treatment that is recovery-oriented and science-based. Principle Accountabilities:
  • Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.

  • Performs all duties in a manner appropriate to the age of the patient. Provides personal care such as bathing, shaving, bed baths to patients and assists with ambulation, positioning, lifting, feeding, hygiene, and assists with commodes and bedpans.
  • Prepares patient's room for new admission including fresh linen, clean overbed table and bedside stand, and personal use items such as water carafe, masks and Kleenex. Takes patients vital signs. Obtains and delivers lab specimens. Answer patient call lights. Makes regular rounds to patients.
  • Cleans patient care equipment including IV pumps, IV stands, wheelchairs, microwave, K-pads, bedside commodes and refrigerator. Transports patients to and from various departments for x-rays, lab work and meals.
  • Practices careful, efficient and non-wasteful use of supplies. Reinforces patient teaching regarding respiratory precautions and unit rules. Follows infection control policies.
  • Interacts with patients and participates in diversional activities indoors or outdoors either on campus or off campus. Actively seeks to engage patients in recreational activities. Accompanies patients on field trips off campus. Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.

Qualifications :
  • Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Certification.
  • A minimum of one-year of full-time experience providing services as a certified nursing assistant inn an in-patient environment.
  • Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, and HHS OIG List of Excluded Individuals / Entities.
  • All state supported living center employees are subject to random drug testing.
  • Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position.
  • The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours.
  • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility.

Other Qualifications:
  • Shall be a United States Citizen
  • Shall not have been convicted of a felony
  • Shall be able to read, write, and speak English
  • Shall be able to operate a personal computer utilizing Microsoft applications, such as Explorer, Outlook, Word, Excel, etc. so as to efficiently create and/or utilize an Electronic Medical Record

  • 1+ years of full-time experience providing services as a certified nursing assistant in an in-patient environment.

Physical Requirements :
  • Must be able to stand or sit for more than 8 hours per day
  • Must be willing to work overtime if necessary
  • Must be able to use an elevator or walk up and down stairs
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and carry up to 10 feet
  • Must be able to routinely grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbows/knees and reach above and below shoulders
  • Must be able to read and interpret handwritten and typewritten print
  • Must be able to communicate by voice and detect sound by ear
  • Must be able to perform duties in an indoor or outdoor environment
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background investigation
  • Must undergo urine drug testing
