Mortgage Loan Underwriter (SAFE) 4 - National Decisioning Support
National Underwriting and Production Risk Management (NUPRM) provides support for transaction underwriting, managing production risk, and implementation of policies and procedures that support the home lending process.
As part of Wells Fargo Home Lending, NUPRM identifies and adopts best practices and controls in relation to retail mortgage products. The National Decisioning Support Team (NDS) supports Centralized and Distributed Retail Agency and Government Fulfillment teams.
This team is responsible for making credit decisions on Agency and Government loans including but not limited to: credit policy exceptions within designated authority, loan size reviews requiring higher lending authority, path of assistance / 2nd level decisions.
  • Analyzes most complex financial and credit information for customer loans according to business unit standards
  • Underwriting exception work streams that cannot be decisioned through the decision tool
  • Compiles, analyzes, and documents loan data and credit risk, borrower and property information
  • Determines decisions/exceptions beyond the decisioning authority levels of less experienced underwriters
  • May negotiate loan provisions
  • Mentors or review analysis of less experienced underwriters and may provide credit policy direction to underwriting managers in the field

This SAFE position has customer contact and job duties which may include the offering/negotiating of terms and/or taking an application for a dwelling secured transaction. As such, this position requires compliance with the S.A.F.E. Mortgage Licensing Act of 2008 and all related regulations. Ongoing employment is contingent upon meeting all such requirements, including acceptable background investigation results. Individuals in a SAFE position also must meet the Loan Originator requirements under Regulation Z (LO) outlined in the job expectations below.

Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of underwriting experience

Other Desired Qualifications
  • 5 years plus of complex Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac or government underwriting experience
  • Highly complex income analysis
  • Highly experienced non Conforming/portfolio retail mortgage underwriting may be considered

Job Expectations
  • This position requires SAFE registration at the time of employment. Wells Fargo will initiate the SAFE registration process immediately after your employment start date. The Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS) web site ( ) provides the MU4R questions and registration required for employment in this position.
  • Individuals in Loan Originator (LO) positions must meet the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau qualification requirements and comply with related Wells Fargo policies. The LO qualification requirements include meeting applicable financial responsibility, character, general financial fitness and criminal background standards. A current credit report will be used to assess your financial responsibility and credit fitness, however, a credit score is not included as part of the evaluation. Successful candidates must also meet ongoing regulatory requirements including additional screening, if necessary.

The salary range displayed below is based on a Full-time 40 hour a week schedule.
