Job Description


Job DescriptionThis position will focus on development of high productivity and robust cell culture processes through classically and statistically designed experiments. The candidate's goals will be to increase process robustness and productivity through comprehensive understanding of levers important to mammalian cell culture involving multiple CHO cell lines producing a variety of novel or biosimilar therapeutics including but not limited to monoclonal antibodies, fusion proteins and other complex biologics. These activities can include clone screening, early and late stage scale-up process optimization, robustness studies and process characterization. A major component of the role will involve conducting and documenting laboratory bioreactor experiments with a focus on process definition and understanding, experimental design and troubleshooting, and data analysis. The ideal candidate will be able to work collaboratively with pilot scale and tech transfer teams for execution of development projects. In addition, the ideal candidate will contribute to improving laboratory process workflows, making laboratory work more efficient and with greater impact. The right candidate may also contribute to technology innovation projects that utilize multi-omics tools to gain deeper understanding of biological processes, development/optimization of continuous manufacturing and evaluation of alternative hosts for low cost protein production. Candidates must be strong team players and have an ability to collaborate effectively on complex projects. A strong affinity for the laboratory with demonstrated success using those techniques is expected. A self-driven candidate will advance Biogen's culture of continued scientific innovation by proposing and executing novel ideas to solve complex problems via writing grants to get internal funding along with strong representation for Biogen at external conferences by presenting the findings.Responsibilities include:Perform and document experiments at bench-scale (shake flasks, AMBR, 3L reactors, etc.) to support development of mammalian Cell Culture processes for recombinant protein productionContribute to experimental planning based on experience and literature searchesCollaboratively work with team members to ensure lab experiments are well-planned and executedPerform data analysis and troubleshooting of experiments and lab equipmentDocument development work in concise reports and provide project updates via oral presentationsSupport lab maintenance tasks, lab harmonization and workflow optimizations.Support new technology evaluations and innovation projects and present findings in form of scientific publications and at external conferences.Additional Responsibilities for Higher Level:Able to execute lab-based experiments and perform data analysis with minimal supervision.Independently able to identify ways to solve complex experimental issues and present solutions to the teams.Demonstrated independence in literature search for identifying solutions to achieve desired product qualities.QualificationsKnowledge and technical experience in mammalian cell culture/ biotechnology related development including aseptic operations, cell biology, biochemistry, analytical techniques, and bioreactor operations. Familiarity working with complex laboratory operations, instrumentation and control systems. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated technical proficiency and creativity. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Proficiency in big data analysis using Python/R or other commercial software is a big plus. 0-5 years relevant experience.Education:Engineer I or Associate Scientist II: Bachelor's or Master's degree with 0-2 years of experience in Bio/Chemical Engineering or related life science field of experience required.Engineer II or Associate Scientist III: Bachelor's degree in Bio/Chemical Engineering or related life science with 2-4 years of direct industrial experience or Master's degree with 0-2 years of industrial experience required.Additional InformationWe are seeking a highly motivated and creative individual with bioprocess engineering experience to join our Cell Culture Development team.
