Under the direct supervision of the Wastewater Operations Supervisor, the WWTF Operator Trainee will perform specialized/technical work functions associated with wastewater treatment plant operations and maintenance.

• Operates the Town’s wastewater treatment plant; monitors plant operations and processes; checks buildings, equipment and system components; identifies any problems and makes necessary adjustments; ensures continuous and effective operation; maintains compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations, standards, and guidelines
• Monitors chemical feeds and distribution, flow rates and other productions, collection and treatment processes; maintains appropriate chemical levels by adjusting system controls and/or adding, adjusting and replacing chemicals in the plant’s systems and their components
• Reads meters, gauges, and dials; records readings, chemical levels, water properties and statistical data; prepares and maintains a variety of logs, records including flowcharts, productions reports, well reports and operation logs
• Performs a variety of physical, chemical and bacteriological tests to determine the chemical composition of wastewater to control quality and ensure compliance with federal and state regulations
• Collects samples; performs laboratory tests or submits samples to outside laboratory for testing of ph, total suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand, E. Coli, dissolved oxygen or other chemicals and compounds; maintains records of findings and sample characteristics; calibrates test equipment; cleans and maintains laboratory equipment
• Inspects and performs maintenance and repair on plant equipment, gauges, meters and related systems and components; rebuilds or installs new pumps, valves and piping; installs and repairs electrical motors; changes oil and fluids and greases pumps and motors; cleans equipment; makes minor electrical and/or plumbing repairs as needed; reports any problems or need for complex equipment repair
• Performs work activities related to the Pollution Protection Plan; provides materials and support; collects and stores rainfall samples; maintains related records; may be contacted in emergency situations
• Performs routine maintenance and repairs to grounds and buildings; maintains cleanliness of buildings and grounds; mows grass; trims and edges around buildings and tanks; removes debris, snow, etc.
• Monitors biosolids during transfer from plant to trucks
• Prepares and/or completes various forms, reports, lists, logs, lab bench sheets and reports, production reports, charts, graphs, spreadsheets, or other documents
• Receives various forms, reports lab bench sheets, policies, procedures, manuals, handbooks, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, proofreads, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate
• Communicates with supervisor, Town employees, and outside businesses and agencies as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, resolve problems, or give/receive advice/direction
• Maintains an awareness of new trends and advances in the profession; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate
• Operates a variety of equipment, machinery and tools used in work projects and activities, which may include hand tools, drill, press, hydraulic press, belt sander, band saw, all types of drills, bench grinder, volt meters, skid steer, fork lift, lawn equipment, pumps, valves, meters, oven, furnace, lab equipment, incubator, spectrometer, or other equipment, machinery and tools as necessary to perform essential functions, personal computer, general office equipment, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software
• Performs other duties as required

The WWTF Operator Trainee will perform tasks involving the regular and at times sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy to heavy objects and materials (20-100 pounds). Scheduled/unscheduled overtime may be mandated as circumstances and workload dictates. Essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, toxic agents, disease or pathogenic substances.

The WWTF Operator Trainee is required to follow departmental expectations and adhere to all rules, regulations, policies and procedures in the Town of Christiansburg Personnel Handbook. Work performance is reviewed utilizing the Town’s employee performance review program following first 6 month introductory period. During this introductory period, the employee must demonstrate a strong understanding of all that the job requires.

• High School diploma or GED; supplemented by one (1) year of experience in wastewater treatment plant operations or related field, preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
• Valid Virginia driver’s license, with the ability to meet and maintain Town insurability requirements with a minimum of two (2) years driving experience; obtain Class B Commercial driver’s license learner’s permit (within six (6) months of hire date)
• Must obtain Class IV or Class III Wastewater Operator License (within one (1) year of hire date), Flagging, and CPR certifications

Knowledge of

• Exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving the evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria
• Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals.
