Job Description

Illinois Action for Children, a local, state and national leader in the early care and education sector for 51 years, is seeking a vibrant and creative Content and Communications Manager. The ideal candidate will have the experience and initiative to play an instrumental role in helping to elevate IAFCs impact, leadership, and expertise through the creation and publication of relevant and timely content.

Under the direction of the Director of Marketing, the Content and Communications Manager writes and produces a variety of compelling content that advances our ability to communicate and engage with partners, donors, child care and early education provider, parents and families, lawmakers, community stakeholders, and the general public; the content develops connections between the community and the resources, services, and supports IAFC provides. A self-motivated storyteller, this position understands the logistical elements of narrative writing, AP writing style, and how to write for—and share information on—different digital platforms for a matrixed audience. The person in this position drives the development and publication of content—both online and offline, and can write both short, shareable content and longer editorial pieces. This position is also responsible for developing a content strategy to magnify the reach, impact, and influence of all campaigns. All work to be completed with minimum supervision and in accordance with organization standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following. The organization reserves the right to add to, delete, change or modify the essential duties and responsibilities at any time.

  1. Write and edit content to online and offline sources.
  2. Collaborate on cross-functional teams to develop content strategies for various audiences.
  3. Lead development of the year-round content strategy for the organization in collaboration with the Director of Marketing and Communications.
  4. Compellingly demonstrate the impact of IAFCs mission on real lives or on specific needs or gaps for the communities and families we serve, while incorporating data surrounding measurable outcomes and/or evidence for justification.
  5. Actively seek out and help define new creative methods and mediums for telling our partner, donor, and other stakeholder stories.
  6. Repurpose and create engaging copy for web pages, emails, appeals, newsletters, case studies, white papers, brochures, social media, online advertising, direct mail, and more.
  7. Collect data and feedback regarding engagement, perception, and influence of the IAFC brand.
  8. Steward the Illinois Action for Children brand when working with vendors on videos, marketing campaigns, and other efforts.
  9. Collaborate with marketing team members to ensure design, text, message, and brand consistency.
  10. Collaborate with IAFCs Director of Marketing and Communications and Digital and Graphic Design Manager on how IAFCs story is told visually and how it aligns with written content.
  11. Assist team members with editing, providing constructive feedback as needed.
  12. Use best practice strategies to increase content views and shares; differentiate between on- and off-brand messaging.
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned by the supervisory personnel

PHYSICAL/Mental DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate clearly, in oral and written formats, with others in person, over the phone, and via other devices. The employee must be able to transcribe, read extensively, prepare and analyze data and figures, constantly operate a computer and other standard office machinery. The employee is required to regularly travel to offsite locations to set-up presentations and displays in physical and electronic forms. The employee must have the ability to lift, carry, push and/or pull objects weighing up to 50lbs. required to speak English, specifically, to communicate both in person and over the telephone.  The employee must regularly operate a word-processing system and therefore must be able to read, produce and transmit data on such a system.  Additionally, the position requires maintaining employee files, supplies and as such, requires occasionally lifting, bending, and walking.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum 5 years of editorial and marketing experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, marketing, or related degree, or equivalent work experience
  • Complete proficiency in blogging, ghost writing, and social media platforms
  • Portfolio of writing samples

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Exceptional writing and editing skills.
  • Combination of content marketing and publishing mindset; always think “customer first”.
  • Understanding of journalistic writing principles.
  • Ability to develop long-form content, and to create immediate content/articles.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience interviewing internal and external stakeholders from all demographic.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments with potentially conflicting timelines.
  • Strategic mindset for how content can be used and repurposed across the organization and with varying audiences.
  • Understanding of video production process and how stories are told visually.
  • Flexibility adjusting to unexpected assignments, difficulties, and deadlines.
  • Experience with website content management systems
  • Experience with marketing automation platforms
  • Intermediate HTML experience
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) a huge plus
