Job Summary

Sonatech, LLC is seeking a detail-oriented person to be responsible for standard and specialized tests of underwater acoustic transducers and sonar systems in Sonatech’s acoustic test tank facility. This position will supervise Acoustic Test personnel and be responsible to develop and perform both mechanical fixturing and acoustic testing according to written test procedures and unit performance specifications.  The Acoustic Test Engineer/Lead Technician reports to the Engineering Manager and works closely with Manufacturing and Quality Assurance.

Essential Functions

  • Develops, organizes, directs and conducts tests of transducers, assemblies and systems based on testing criteria he/she helps generate into written policies, procedures and written test plans.
  • Develops, organizes and maintains accurate records of test measurements and reports results to appropriate engineering, manufacturing and QA groups.
  • Helps generate, implement and follows policies and procedures for operating required machinery and equipment in a safe manner following established safety rules.
  • Responsible for maintaining the acoustic test facility as an organized, neat and clean work area.
  • Establishes and follows equipment, tool and instrument control procedures and corrects/reports any unsafe acts or conditions to his or her immediate supervisor.
  • Helps establish procedures for, and then performs, periodic inspections, preventative maintenance and installation of machinery, equipment, parts and components.
  • Reports to their supervisor about all ongoing projects with regard to project status, completion time projections and any problems that may have arisen during the course of the project.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Interfaces directly with Engineering and Manufacturing to make recommendations and provide support for test approaches, fixtures and procedures.
  • Previews specifications for completeness, accuracy, adequacy and compliance with company and/or customer specifications.
  • Reviews and provides feedback on test procedures, work orders, test manuals, performance specifications, wiring diagrams, and schematics to determine testing approach and equipment to be used.
  • Works with Engineering and Quality Assurance to generate test plans and procedures based on customer contract requirements and/or performance specifications.
  • Tests functional performance of transducers, assemblies and systems under specified environmental conditions such as temperature and pressure.
  • Typical electronic test equipment includes preamplifiers, frequency filters, power amplifiers, digital multimeters, hi-pot testers, oscilloscopes, signal generators, and spectrum analyzers.
  • Makes measurements and records display readings for the above equipment including voltage, frequency, distortion, inductance, resistance and capacitance.
  • Records/graphs test data and compares results with test procedure acceptance limits.
  • Works with engineering to analyze test results for units that don’t meet requirements and helps determine the cause of the failure and corrective action necessary.
  • Works directly with Engineering to help design and develop test tank and unit test fixtures.
  • Identifies, justifies initiates procurement and maintains test equipment and fixtures.
  • Generates standard operating and calibration procedures for all test tank equipment.
  • Provides acoustic test tank labor and material cost estimates in support of quotes and proposals.
  • Performs internal certifications and calibrations per approved procedures.

Job Requirements

  • Understanding of underwater acoustic test operations (setup, data collection and data reduction)
  • Experience with MATLAB, Labview, and computer-controlled data acquisition
  • Associate degree, engineering degree preferred, or equivalent experience
  • Three, or more, years of experience as a test technician
  • Experience with electrical and electro-mechanical testing equipment
  • Extreme attention to detail including measurements and record-keeping
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong communication and time management skills
  • Works well in a team-oriented, supportive and collaborative environment
  • US Citizenship or permanent residence status

 

Preferred Experience

  • Underwater acoustic test experience at Navy, university, or industrial facility
  • US Navy Sonar Technician
  • Experience with ANSI/ASA S1.20-2012 Procedures for Calibration of Underwater Electroacoustic Transducers
  • Prior experience performing standard acoustic calibration tests (TVR, FFVS, Beam Pattern, Impedance)
