The San Francisco VA Health Care System provides health services to Veterans through the San Francisco VA Medical Center (SFVAMC) and six community-based outpatient clinics in Santa Rosa, Eureka, Ukiah, Clearlake, San Bruno and downtown San Francisco. They have a long history of conducting cutting-edge research, establishing innovative medical programs, and providing compassionate care to Veterans. The Medical Center has 112 operating beds and a 120-bed Community Living Center. Primary, mental health and specialty care is provided at its outpatient clinics. The Medical Center has been affiliated with the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), School of Medicine for nearly 60 years. All physicians are jointly recruited by SFVAMC and UCSF School of Medicine

      

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

THIS IS A TEMPORARY POSITION AND CONTINGENT UPON CONTRACT AWARD

Will provide a variety of nursing functions in support of the COVID-19 Pandemic at various Veteran Affairs (VA) facilities in the San Francisco Bay Area.  Duties will include but are not limited to the following.

  • Assess the health care needs of the patient/resident and maintain or develop a plan of care to meet interdisciplinary goals
  • Assess and act on significant changes in the patient’s/resident’s health condition
  • Carry out the plan of care by performing/assigning delegated tasks
  • Collect and document pertinent data into the electronic patient/resident medical record
  • Complete nursing assessments within required time frames, and in accordance with policy and procedure.
  • identify and act on predictable needs of the patient/resident
  • meet the health care needs of patient/resident by assessing and assisting the patient/resident to meet expressed needs
  • meet the emotional and spiritual needs of patients/residents and/or families
  • prioritize and complete tasks within the RN’s assigned shift
  • Perform head-to-toe assessment
  • Insert IV lines
  • Care and management of peripheral and central lines, including PICC lines
  • Administer medication including IVs
  • Coordinate and participate in admission and discharge of patient
  • Measure vital signs/hemodynamic monitoring including Pain (the 5th Vital Sign), pulse oximetry, etc.
  • Perform wound care including dressing changes (sterile and non-sterile), and obtaining wound cultures as necessary
  • Obtain and deliver specimens to lab
  • Perform tracheostomy care
  • Perform non-acute and/or acute ventilator care, if needed
  • Perform suctioning including oral, nasogastic, and tracheostomy
  • Perform deep suctioning, which may include obtaining specimens
  • Assess for and administer tube feedings
  • Assist with routine urinary and bowel elimination including catheters, colostomies, and digital stimulation
  • Educate patients/residents and/or families regarding health and diagnoses and medication administration including indications for the medication.
  • Respond and assist in an emergency situation
  • Provide clinical oversight to Licensed Practical Nurses, Nursing Assistants and Health Technicians

Job Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelors Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 2-3 years’ experience as a ICU or CCU nurse  
  • Active and unrestricted RN State License and the ability to be favorably credentialed
  • Current BLS certification
  • Current ACLS certification
  • Must be able to multi-task, be detail-oriented, be organized and have excellent verbal and communication skills
  • Proficiency with computer and common office equipment, as well as with MS Office products required.
  • Must be able to multi-task, be detail oriented, organized, and demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to perform duties in a stressful and high paced environment without physical limitations.
  • Ability to adapt to sudden changes and flexibility in work requirements to include potential shift changes based on operational needs and/or command priorities
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. and carry up to 10ft
  • Must be U.S. Citizen
