Job DescriptionThe Gene Therapy Accelerator Unit (GTxAU) at Biogen is seeking an innovative, goal-driven, and experienced scientist to help advance gene therapies for the treatment of diseases in the eye.The candidate will lead a small team of scientists to accelerate the development and characterization of new gene therapy compounds for ophthalmology indications. This person will be responsible for applying leading-edge knowledge of vectorology and ophthalmology to impact enterprise-wide gene therapy initiatives engaging cross-functional scientists and engineers. Additional responsibilities include helping to build the GTxAU strategy, aligning GTxAU activities with R&D and Corporate Strategies, defining viable GTxAU timelines, and setting milestones to develop a robust engine for future pipeline programs.The candidate should have extensive experience with the development of gene therapies for the eye and possess deep knowledge of in vitro and in vivo characterization of AAV vectors. The candidate will maintain an up-to-date knowledge of pertinent literature and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills to lead interdisciplinary teams and engage with cross-functional collaborators, both internal and external to the company. This personwill benefit from a rich and growing set of technological resources and capabilities across Biogen and may also be participating in external collaborations to support our gene therapy pipeline.Direct responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:Lead the in vitro and in vivo characterization of AAV vectors for ophthalmologic indicationsOperate with high level of independence to provide significant contributions to multiple pipeline projects. Vital contributor to scientific and strategic discussions.Help oversee timeline of gene therapy programs. Delegate tasks effectively to achieve short-, near-, and long-term timeline-specific success.Manage and mentor small team of scientists. Maintain a dynamic and entrepreneurial environment that fosters growth, development, and retention of top talent. Engage with team to promote personal and professional development.Participate in evaluation of external opportunities, such as with startup companies and academic labs, with the goal of addressing gaps in internal technologies/capabilitiesLiaise extensively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure GTxAU becomes an influential, industry-trusted focal point for innovation in gene therapy for eye diseases. Possess network of internal and external scientific collaborators.Build strong partnerships and oversee external academic collaborators/CROs to accelerate internal portfolio programsReview, interpret and communicate data across functions and to project teamsLead/contribute to development of internal reports, SOPs and scientific communicationsAct in concert with key internal financial and research stakeholders to develop an operating budget for group.
