District Traffic Specialist Thomaston, GA


A Traffic Specialist I - is responsible for incident management and reporting at the District Operations Center (DOC) for the Georgia Department of Transportation located in Thomaston, GA. Applicants must be self-motivated and work well in a team-oriented environment. The Traffic Specialist will be overseeing traffic incidents and be the main point of contact for all DOC decision making related to traffic incidents both planned and unplanned in addition to updating Dynamic Message Signs (DMS).


  • Creates reports of Events/Incidents in the database system accurately and timely as required by GDOT.
  • Generates and edits response plans to ensure proper notification on the DMS and portable signs located on the freeway system in the Districts 31 county region.
  • Updates and terminates events/incidents in a timely manner that meets the expectations of GDOT.
  • Prepares alerts and other messaging that meets the expectations of the GDOT
  • Prepares accurate and timely weekly performance reports and other monthly reports.
  • Completes special traffic engineering and data analysis projects for GDOT as requested.
  • Provide excellent customer service to all users of the TMC.
  • Supports on-floor training, coaching and mentoring for operations staff as appropriate.
  • Provides traffic engineering support to the client and operations staff by maintaining cognizance of state-wide traffic flow using maps, event lists, construction, speed data, ramp meters and cameras (CCTV).
  • Compiles statistical performance measures reports for the client and operations management staff as appropriate.
  • Supports the development and maintenance of all response plans.
  • Performs special assignments as it relates to traffic operations, traveler information, and incident management.
  • Performs other such duties as the manager may deem necessary.


  • Bachelors degree (BS) in Civil Engineering or equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • Experience in aspects of traffic planning corridor operational analyses, traffic impact studies, traffic signal design, timing and operational evaluation/ recommendations.
  • Registered Engineer in Training (EIT) preferred
  • Advanced Microsoft Word, Excel, Database software and Microsoft Outlook skills are preferred.
  • Must possess current, valid drivers license.
