WSP is currently initiating a search for a Senior Supervising Structural Engineer (Railroads) for our Newark, New Jersey office.
The Sr. Supervising Structural Engineer will support the Structures Technical Excellence Center Manager (TEC) with diversification and growth, drive strategic direction, and potentially serve as a subregional Project Management role for multidiscipline projects for any office in the New York/New Jersey District. This person will work closely with the NJ Area & Office Managers, the Northeast Structures TEC Manager and the Regional Marketing & Project Operations Managers to support the strategic direction of the New York/New Jersey sub-region (as part of Northeast Region) of the Transportation & Infrastructure Sector in the U.S. Region of WSP.
The Sr. Supervising Structural Engineer is responsible for a diverse range of operational and business development (BD) activities that support the overall positioning of the company and contribute to achieving the region’s annual sales goals by assisting the Newark TEC Manager in BD activities will both internal and external elements/clients. The external responsibilities will include developing and managing key client relationships, gathering and disseminating market/pursuit intelligence, building pipeline across transportation market sectors focused on Railroad clients, and maintaining a strong brand image within the industry. Internal responsibilities include motivating and driving the team to achieve overall sales and project delivery objectives, assisting the TEC Manager in recruiting and deploying resources to successfully pursue specific projects and strategic opportunities, staff development through Coaching, Mentoring and Training, managing projects and staff assigned to them, and delivering innovative and high quality work products to support our client and project needs.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Represent the firm in the market through involvement in client and industry events and associations to promote intelligence gathering and pipeline development with a concentration in Railroad Industry clientele
Develop new business leads
Develop strategic alliances and project partners to secure new work
Lead strategic project pursuits
Participate in negotiations to secure contract awards
Oversee client relations for the business unit’s strategic clients, meet with clients
Responsible for the management, growth and development of the Structures team, as well as performance of the projects they are directly involved with or responsible for
Provide local focus, direction and leadership within the Newark office, partnering closely with the Area Manager, Office Managers, Business Development Manager, Regional Business Manager, and other supervisory staff
Other duties may include, but are not limited to, project management and/or technical leadership
Create growth strategies for the sub-region and assist in managing the annual achievements
Assess and expedite work sharing throughout the region to meet area delivery needs with clients and projects.
Coordinate, develop and oversee appropriate interaction with WSP resources
Client Management & Project Delivery
Responsible for managing the relationship with various clients including each of the projects for those client
Existing relations/experience with NJ Transit, Amtrak, Long Island RR, NYC Transit and/or Metro North RR is Critical in development of future work load for the office/group
Lead and manage the projects assigned to you for various clients within the area/sub-region
Responsible for the revenue and bottom line delivery of the portfolio of projects that you are leading as PM within the area/sub-region
Interfaces with staff from a range of other disciplines (traffic, civil, planning, geotechnical, transit, water, environmental, facilities, etc.) to support a diverse range of projects.
Improve overall quality and delivery of projects throughout the structures discipline and those that are under your Leadership.

Keen understanding of the competitive environment and sub-regional players
Knowledge of structures design for both highway and railroad bridges and ancillary structures on both Design-Bid-Build and Design-Build projects and programs.
Experience with conceptual planning, analysis through final design of new steel and concrete bridges of various types and configurations from simple short spans to long span or complex structures and/or movable bridges and other transportation (vehicular and pedestrian) structural systems. Evaluation of bridges and transportation structures (vehicular, rail and transit facilities) and the identification and prioritization of repairs.
Analysis and load rating of existing bridges (vehicular and rail)
Experience with conceptual through final design of the rehabilitation of existing bridges, infrastructure facilities and other transportation related structural systems
Ability to establish partnerships with internal and external project management, client representatives, government agencies, and other organizations.
Positive attitude and people skills that constitute a TEAM player.
Ability to manage staff to effectively deliver projects on schedule/deadlines, including managing multiple staff (sometimes not within the local office) working on multiple projects, as well as including management of subconsultants
Understanding of project budgets, administration, contracts, and project management responsibilities.
Ability to market the skills of the structural and transportation engineering practice.
Ability to work in a corporate environment, communicating with a wide range of professional skill sets.
Sound decision-making abilities, strategic and visionary thinking, and creative business development capabilities across a multi-disciplined practice
Good writing, verbal, and presentation skills
Quality Control & Assurance reviews of all project deliverables.
Ability to travel 20-30% if/when necessary.
Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures
Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies
Experience and Education Required:
15+ years of relevant work experience in structures and transportation engineering, including experience supervising staff and managing projects and subconsultants
Bachelor of Science in a relevant engineering discipline required, or equivalent degree required.
A Master of Science degree in a relevant discipline preferred.
Extensive participation in Professional Societies/Associations is preferred
Professional registration (PE) in state of NJ is required (or obtainable within six months). Other regional state PE’s is desirable.
