The Veterans Administration Eastern Colorado Healthcare System (ECHS) is part of America’s largest integrated health care system, providing care at various health care facilities, including medical centers and outpatient sites of care of varying complexity (VHA outpatient clinics).  Nationwide, the VA serves 9 million enrolled Veterans each year.

 

Work under this contract will be performed at all Eastern Colorado Healthcare System (ECHS) access points including Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) and Community Living Centers (CLC) in numerous locations in Denver, Aurora, Lakewood, Golden, LaJunta, Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Alamosa, Salida, Lamar, Burlington and Ft. Carson.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Provide complex and comprehensive professional nursing services within the professional scope of practice for a variety of diagnoses for patients of all ages.  Duties of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct initial assessment on patients; develop nursing care plans based on identified patient needs, coordinate with ancillary services to assure provision of care, document all plans, assessments and care provided.
  • Provide patient and family education throughout the hospitalization. Initiate discharge planning. 
  • Responsible for total patient care, including medications, orders, and treatments. 
  • Assists the physician in performing special procedures, including sterile procedures.
  • Provide the full range of ICU nursing services within the professional scope of practice for a variety of post-operative and critically ill patients.
  • Assists in emergency nursing procedures necessary for prompt control of changes in the patient' s physical condition. 
  • Keeps abreast of changing techniques in critical care nursing and maintains a high level of expertise in critical care. 
  • Head-to-toe assessments. Knowledge of normal versus abnormal findings and reporting of abnormal findings to Charge Nurse and/or M.D., if warranted.
  • Critical thinking to intervene with appropriate intervention for urgent/emergent care. Care of acute and chronically ill patients. 10. Knowledge of hemodynamics. 
  • Basic IV and central line skills. 
  • Basic understanding of cardiac monitoring equipment.
  • Operate and monitor specialized equipment including, but not limited to: portable dialysis machines, CRRT machines, oxygen, hypothermia units, various types of suction apparatus, infusion equipment, patient-controlled analgesia pumps (PCA), epidural pumps, sequential compression devices, cardio-respiratory monitors vital sign monitors, invasive hemodynamic catheters and monitors, and ventilators. 
  • The ability to identify and manage life-sustaining physiologic functions in unstable patients. 
  • Conduct postoperative patient evaluations, summon the appropriate specialist in emergency situations and provide nursing care as necessary throughout the postoperative episode. 
  • Administer oxygen, IV fluids, blood transfusions, and prescribed medications in accordance with VA policy. 
  • Ensure that all JC standards for professional nursing care are met during performance of care. 
  • Complete appropriate medical record forms in compliance with VA guidelines and policies for each patient.
  • Verify the content and correctness of all recorded entries in the patient record. All documentation/records/reports must meet or exceed established VA standards to include, but not limited to: timeliness, legibility, accuracy, content, and signature. 
  • Respond to emergency codes as directed and summon appropriate backup from the clinical and hospital staff. 
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to cultural diversity, race, gender, and others individual differences in the workforce, in the Veteran population and in the Community. 
  • Other duties, as assigned. 

Job Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Diploma, Associates Degree (AD) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from an NLN accredited program, college or university (BSN preferred)
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in any state
  • Shall have been actively practicing as an ICU nurse for the past two years.
  • Have and maintain current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is required. 
  • Have no health or physical disability restrictions that interfere with the performance of assigned duties. 
  • Have documented training and skills verification.
  • Must be a US citizen
