SUMMER CAMP SUPERVISOR Town of Christiansburg Aquatics Department Class Code 798 JOB SUMMARY Under the direction of the Program Coordinator, the Summer Camp Supervisor is responsible for the supervision and planning of daily activities, field trips and special events for Summer Camp participants. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Maintains constant supervision of camp participants and counselors during all camp activities • Plans, organizes and supervises the summer camp • Plans special event activities for each one week session of camp • Maintains proper records and information pertaining to the camp and submits to the supervisor as required • Acts as a liaison between parents and camp counselors and between the Aquatics Department and counselors • Greets camp participants and parents upon arrival and departure; assists camp participants and parents adjust to the camp experience • Models enthusiasm and appropriate behavior at all times; encourages camp participants to fully engage in the camp program • Monitors the health and safety of camp participants; identifies participants with illnesses, injuries and special needs and immediately notifies the Program Supervisor • Maintains attendance counts at all camp activities, reports camp participant absences to the Program Coordinator immediately and ensures safety for all camp participants • Reports rule violations by camp participants and staff to the Program Coordinator • Works cooperatively with camp counselors and staff; seeks assistance or advice from the Program Coordinator as needed • Maintains camp program equipment • Other duties as assigned by supervisor
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT • Camp program equipment JOB CONTEXT The Summer Camp Supervisor may work up to 40 hours per week, dependent upon the number of participants and schedule of camp activities. Camp hours are 7:30a.m. – 5:30p.m., Monday – Friday. The Summer Camp Supervisor regularly works in a gym, outdoors, swimming pool or other facility and the environment is often noisy.
WORK PERFORMANCE The Summer Camp Supervisor is required to follow departmental expectations and adhere to all rules, regulations, policies and procedures in the Town of Christiansburg Personnel Handbook.
Work performance is reviewed utilizing the Town’s employee performance review program following first 6 month probationary period.
JOB REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION • High school diploma or equivalent • College coursework in education, arts or recreation is highly desirable EXPERIENCE • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age • Previous summer camp employment experience strongly preferred LICENSES/CERTIFICATION • Valid driver’s license with the ability to meet/maintain Town insurability requirements with a minimum of two (2) years driving experience • American Red Cross CPR/ AED/basic first aid certification (or ability to obtain upon hire)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Ability to: • Demonstrate excellent leadership, conduct self in accordance with the highest integrity and appropriate responsible behavior at all times • Exert patience and self – control; be enthusiastic and dependable • Be flexible, work well with others and follow and provide direction • Adjust to a variety of environmental conditions, i.e., work outside in varied temperatures • Maintain open and effective communication and work with a variety of age and skill levels • Teach and lead various recreational activities and increase participant involvement
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS • Lift/carry/manipulate items weighing up to 50 pounds • Able to sit, stand, swim, walk, run and perform tactile movements with hands • Talk and/or hear to give participant instructions and receive feedback • Lift arms above shoulder level; reach with hands and arms; kneel/bend/stoop/crawl
SAFETY The employee shall adhere to Town of Christiansburg policies regarding safety precautions and the use of safety equipment that are necessary for the health and safety of all employees. If a safety concern arises, the employee must stop any life-threatening problem immediately and inform the employee’s supervisor. Safety gear pertinent to this position may include but is not limited to the following: • Non – latex gloves • CPR mask • First aid equipment (band – aids, etc.)
