Job Description

Job Summary

The Upholsterer repairs and rebuilds upholstered furniture.

Principal Accountabilities
  • Uses variety of hand tools to remove, repair, or install upholstered furniture
  • Removes covering, webbing and padding from seat, arms, back and sides of work piece
  • Removes defective springs by cutting cords or wires that hold them in place
  • Replaces webbing and springs or reties springs
  • Measures and cuts new covering material
  • Installs material on inside of arms, back, seat, and over outside back and arms of wooden frame
  • Tacks or sews ornamental trim, such as braid and buttons to cover and frame
  • Operates sewing machine to seam cushions and join various sections of covering materials
  • Repairs wooden frame of work piece
  • Repairs seats from various types of vehicles
  • Repairs a variety of items requiring special shaping, cushioning and covering including aircraft insulation and soundproofing panels
  • Repairs special devices and assemblies and other items such as carpets, inflatable shelters and tents made of canvas and other fabrics

Knowledge & Skills
  • Knowledge of fabrics and upholstery methods

Experience & Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Four (4) years of upholstery experience is required.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment
  • Occasional lifting of objects weighing up to 50 pounds is required.
  • Duties may involve working with oils, lubricants, and chemical cleaner and solutions.
