POSITION OVERVIEW:The Radiation Protection Specialist performs radiological protection activities for the Salt Waste Processing Facility, a new facility designed to chemically process high level radioactive liquid waste. The position is assigned to one of four rotating shift crews supporting facility operations 24 hours/7 days-a-weekSPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participates as required, in the SWPF Emergency Response Organization.
  • Operates portable radiation detection instruments, including set up and quality control performance checks.
  • Performs radiation, contamination and air monitoring surveys, evaluating conditions using appropriate instrumentation.
  • Documents results of surveys in accordance with relevant department procedures and standards.
  • Provides job coverage in accordance with approved Radiological Work Permits ensuring safe conditions for the workforce.
  • Assists in the monitoring and decontamination of personnel and/or equipment.
  • Performs other responsibilities associated with this position as may be appropriate.


  • US citizen and ability to maintain DOE site access is required.
  • Capable of being approved to wear Personal Protective Equipment and Respiratory Protection Devices


  • High School Diploma (A.S. degree in Health Physics or Physical Science preferred)
  • Job Related Experience: Three years of related experience at a DOE or NRC nuclear or radiological facility
  • Nuclear Experience: Three years of experience at a DOE or NRC nuclear or radiological facility


  • Ability to successfully pass a written DOE RCT Fundamentals Challenge Examination.
  • Ability to enforce Radiation Protection requirements and stop work when compliance is jeopardized.
  • Strong working knowledge of radiation protection principles and practices.
  • Good computer skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to interface with customers and all levels of personnel.
  • Ability to evaluate job performance and recommend methods for improving the ALARA program efficiency and worker awareness of radiological controls.
