Summary of Position
Performs a wide range of routine and complex pharmaceutical duties in support of pharmacy operations. Assumes a lead role among support staff within the pharmacy. Relieves the Pharmacist of duties related to the intake of new prescription information and the handling of Schedule II controlled substances. Must possess Pharmacy Technician Certification, as required by the Massachusetts Pharmacy Board of Registration.
Essential FunctionsRequests and accepts both new prescriptions and refill authorizations, relieving Pharmacist of prescription intake duties. Enters prescription data into automated pharmacy dispensing system. Exercises authority in the handling of Schedule II Controlled Substances. Performs distribution services, including reconstituting or bulk compounding of a prescription. Performs prepackaging operations involving various pharmacy products, measures prescribed quantities, and labels prior to storage. Affixes label to prescription container. Assists patients with pick-up of medications, and provides courteous customer service. Processes and records payments accurately. Counsels patients on medications, and interviews patients for allergy screens, compliance, dosage, etc. Responsible for inventory and preparing medication orders. Receives pharmacy supplies from vendors, confirms quantities received, inspects for damaged shipment, and reports discrepancies to supervisor. Prices medications and stores appropriately with proper rotation. Inspects and re-stocks clinical areas and emergency carts throughout the site, as directed. Assumes a lead role among support staff within the pharmacy. Performs all job functions in compliance with applicable federal, state, local and company policies and procedures.Non-Essential FunctionsPerforms other duties as needed. Any other duties performed which are not listed above are considered non-essential functions.Minimum RequirementsEducation: Graduate of an approved pharmacy technician program, or equivalent institutional/retail pharmacy experience. Must possess and maintain appropriate registration as required by Massachusetts Pharmacy Board of Registration, as well as National Pharmacy Training Certification. Requires knowledge of laws and regulations related to pharmacy practice and patient confidentiality. Requires knowledge of medication abbreviation and symbols, common dosage calculations, and storage requirements. Skills and Experience: Must possess working knowledge of pharmacy operations and cash handling experience. Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills are required. Must demonstrate excellent customer service skills, strong communication skills, and problem-solving abilities. Strong computer skills also required. Must be at least 18 years of age, with minimum 1 years experience in a retail pharmacy setting. Working ConditionsBusy medical environment with frequent deadlines and interruptions. All Pharmacy Department applicants, (excluding Clinical Pharmacy) who are offered a job with Atrius Health will be tested for drugs as part of the post job offer employment screening process. Any applicant who tests positive for illegal drug use will not be hired. While Atrius Health cannot force a candidate to take a drug test, refusing to take the test may result in a rescinded offer of employment.
