The Aircraft Mechanic III(UH-60, AH-64 or CH-47) maintains repairs and modifies aircraft structures, structural components and engines of complex to extreme difficulty.
(Typical duties include the following, although specific duties vary by assignment or contract)
Maintains and repairs aircraft components including but not limited to flight controls, engines, hydraulics, pneumatics, fuel systems and mechanical components.
Applies technical knowledge of airframe and power plant systems in determining equipment malfunctions and applies technical expertise in restoring equipment condition and operation.
Removes and installs aircraft subsystem assemblies and components such as engines, rotors, transmissions, mechanical flight controls and their components.
Services and lubricates aircraft and subsystems.
Safely prepares aircraft for inspections and maintenance checks and services.
Performs scheduled inspections and assists in performing special inspections.
Performs limited maintenance operational checks and diagnoses and troubleshoots aircraft systems using special tools and test equipment as required.
Uses and performs operator maintenance on tools, special tools and aircraft ground support equipment.
Applies comprehensive technical expertise to solve moderate problems by interpreting technical documentation such as aircraft Technical Manuals, Maintenance Information and Action Messages and all technical guidance provided through government official representatives.
Uses a thorough knowledge of aircraft mechanical component troubleshooting, repair procedures and replacement of parts.
Uses a knowledge of electrical theory and of aircraft unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, sheet metal brakes and sheers.
Participates in maintenance test flights and operation checks as required.
Uses a working knowledge of technical publications and the Government STAMIS to make entries in aircraft logs and records.
Receives technical assistance, as required, from higher-level technician.
Prioritize workloads and is required to lead teams through more complex aircraft relevant tasks.
Inspect all required aeronautical type maintenance to be performed by Aircraft Mechanic I & II.
Inspect all aircraft assigned.
Plans, conducts, and supervises aircraft technical inspections.
Computes basic weight and balance records.
Participates in maintenance test flights and operation checks as required.
Ensures compliance with aircraft configuration control, Army oil analysis Program, and test measuring diagnostic equipment calibration.
Provides guidance to lower level technicians in aircraft repair, technical inspection techniques, and procedures according to directives, technical manuals, work standards, and operational policies.
Prepares evaluations, special reports, and records pertaining to aircraft maintenance repair and related activities.
When assigned to operate Flexible Engine Diagnostic System (FEDS). Shall have Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Powerplant License. If no FAA Powerplant License, then shall have minimum five years documented as a Flexible Engine Diagnostic System (FEDS) operator.
When designated shall obtain DoD EPA Refrigerant Processing Certificate Section 608 Technician Certification (Universal) or Minimum Type II.
If assigned, all Weight and Balance Personnel Shall be trained according to AR 95-1.
When qualified may be designated as an additional duty safety officer and or site safety specialist (SSS, as a primary duty).
May be designated as a Foreign Object Elimination/Foreign Object Debris (FOE/FOD) Program Administrator.
As qualified and when required can perform non-crew member duties.
When qualified and as assigned for crane operator duties shall have three years of crane operation related experience and shall comply with Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) 1926 Safety and Health Regulations for Construction, Subpart: CC Cranes & Derricks in Construction 1926.1427 Operator qualification and Certification.
When selected, qualified and trained IAW contact requirements will perform aircraft condition evaluations (ACE) inspection duties.
As required capable of using Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) for job duties.
May support AS9100-AS9110 internal audits, corrective action requests, assist section, department, and/or program in developing plans to correct identified shortfalls.
May assist with continual improvement initiatives.

Knowledge & Skills
Proficient in the use of the Government STAMIS used to maintain Army aircraft forms and records.
Thorough knowledge of aircraft mechanical component troubleshooting/repair procedures and replacement of components.
Thorough knowledge of aircraft sheet metal/structural modification and repair and the ability to determine functionality of non-complex electrical systems.
Detailed knowledge of aircraft unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, cable tensiometers, sheet metal brakes and sheers, etc.
Able to prioritize workload to maintain schedules on assigned projects.
Possess the experience and ability to provide technical support to structural/mechanical engineers and customers alike.
Excellent organizational skills in prioritizing workload to meet aircraft delivery schedule.
Basic computer data entry skills required for use of maintenance and logistics databases.
Shall possess the level of experience necessary to inspect all required aeronautical type maintenance to be performed by skill class Mechanic I and must have a combination of experience to repair engines, sheet metal, structural, hydraulic, electrical, power train and general mechanical maintenance of moderate difficulty, required to meet the assigned missions.
Shall have a thorough knowledge of aircraft mechanical component troubleshooting, diagnosing problems, repair procedures and replacement of parts: requires broad knowledge of aircraft sheet metal/structural modifications and repair.
Shall have basic knowledge of electrical theory.
Shall have thorough knowledge of aircraft unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, sheet metal brakes and sheers.
Shall have a working knowledge of making entries in aircraft logbooks & records, military technical publications, and the Army's Unit Level Logistics Aviation Information System, ULLS-AE.
Shall have a thorough knowledge of aircraft sheet metal and structural modification and repair.
Shall have the ability to determine functionality of non-complex electrical systems.
Shall have a detailed knowledge of aircraft unique tools such as cable tensiometers.
All mechanics assigned to perform maintenance on FAA certified aircraft must meet FAA requirements
When assigned to Engine Specialized Repair Activity, must hold a valid (current) FAA Powerplant license.
Must be able to type using a standard keyboard to communicate through e-mail and software applications.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing in English.
Experience & Education
Completion of high school or equivalent and U.S. military technical school or specialized training course is desired, certification of education level is required.
Valid up-to-date A&P license; preferred plus (5) five years aviation maintenance experience, (5) five years rotary wing aircraft experience, and (2) two years on the assigned MDS is required. All experience must be within the (10) ten most recent years is required.
Physical Requirements/Working Environment
Must be able to walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for extended periods throughout the day.
Must be able to climb stairs, ramps, ladders, and work stands.
Must be able to crouch, crawl, grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbow/knee and reach above/below shoulders.
May be required to lift heavy objects whose weight may exceed 50 pounds.
Will be required to handle dirty parts and lubricants.
Will be required to wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Must be able to pass a Respirator Physical and Fit Test qualification.
May be required to operate power vehicles, machinery, hand tools, ground support equipment, fork lift, etc.
Must be able to lift/push/pull minimum of 50 pounds.
May work in maintenance shop or outside.
Must be able to work in a shop where the environment is drafty, noisy, and dirty.
May be exposed to extreme noise from operating equipment.
May be exposed to electrical shock hazards or work near moving mechanical parts or vehicles.
May be required to travel domestically and internationally on short notice, to austere environments, under harsh living conditions.
