Job summary:

The Bilingual Education Specialist delivers and participates in the ongoing assessment of multidisciplinary and Spanish/English bilingual programs at the Aquarium and offsite for PreK-12th grade school groups, teens, teachers and/or community members which incorporate the Aquarium's main messages and exemplify effective communication, emphasize high levels of learner participation, allow for diverse needs of learners and accommodate the learning styles and conservation readiness of very young children as well as adults.

Core Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging school programs to PreK-12th grade students, their teachers and chaperones fluently in Spanish and English at the Aquarium and off-site, during the day, after school, evenings and on weekends
  • With the teen or teacher programs teams, deliver and assess engaging youth and/or teacher professional development programs fluently in Spanish and English
  • Assist in the development and testing of instructional materials for education programs and projects
  • Serve on assigned program and project teams
  • Assist with program delivery, complete additional assigned tasks and provide support as necessary
  • Serve as a resource and mentor to volunteers in the development of job skills
  • Represent the department, division and the Aquarium to the general public, visiting dignitaries and the professional education community
  • Work with a wide variety of staff and volunteers
  • Assist with ongoing programmatic tasks as needed
  • Drive Aquarium vehicles to school and community sites as needed
  • Load and unload equipment and materials

Absolutely Required Skills / Knowledge / Ability / Experience or Education

  • BS/BA degree
  • Able to write and speak clearly, concisely and fluently in Spanish and English
  • Experience delivering, implementing and evaluating formal or informal education programs
  • Experience working with diverse audiences or communities
  • Strong and effective interpersonal skills
  • Flexible with changes in work priorities
  • Mature work habits, task and detail oriented
  • Ability to work within, and maintain Monterey Bay Aquarium's Core Values
  • Must possess the ability to obtain a valid California driver's license and maintain clearance in the DMV Pull Program

Desired Skills / Knowledge / Ability / Experience or Education

  • Strong background in science and/or science education
  • Strong technology skills
  • SCUBA certification
