JOB SUMMARY Under the direct supervision of the Environmental Program Supervisor, the Engineering Intern will perform office and field work in water, stormwater, and transportation projects. The Intern will gain experience with civil/environmental engineering and GIS duties. Currently this is a remote internship focused on municipal stormwater, GIS, and environmental projects.
INTERN ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Field duties include but are not limited to identifying storm drain network components for mapping and database development. • Delineate drainage areas to storm drain networks utilizing GIS software. • Conduct field assessments of stormwater best management practices and storm drain outfalls. • Review and enter inspection results in a standardized database format and provide QA/QC of entered data • Prepare or complete various forms, reports, correspondence, work orders, service requests, inspection reports, or other documents. • Communicate with supervisor, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status or work, exchange information, or resolve problems • Assist engineering staff in research and/or data analysis, including report preparation and public outreach/education documents. • Other office duties include but are not limited to GIS mapping, assistance with electronic document conversion project, and miscellaneous office support.
JOB CONTEXT The Engineering Intern will perform tasks that require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds). Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odor, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, animal/wildlife attacks/bites.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE INTERN PROGRAM • Undergraduate or Graduate Program of Study in Civil/Environmental Engineering and/or Geographic Information Systems (GIS)/Geography or related field of study (Natural Resources, Environmental Science) • Knowledge of hydrology, watershed delineation and modeling, and GIS data management • Valid Virginia driver’s license with two (2) years of driving experience and the ability to meet/maintain Town insurability requirements is mandatory • Must be able to work in the field for extended periods of time in varied weather conditions and perform manual tasks requiring moderate strength • Proficiency with GIS, CAD, Microsoft Office Excel and Access is preferred but not mandatory
