Employment Status: Full-time, Probationary, "Exempt" position.

Work Schedule: Regular: Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Summer: Monday-Thursday 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Position Summary:
The mission of the Coyote PLUS Programs (CPP) is to foster student success and educational equity, creating collaborative peer-to-peer communities, and providing resources and spaces for impactful learning. Supplemental Instruction (SI) is one of three peer-to-peer academic success programs within the department. SI supports student success and retention in courses with historically high DFWI (Drop, Fail, Withdrawal, Incomplete) rates and that constitute a significant challenge for various student groups by providing peer-facilitated group study sessions that promote collaborative and interactive learning. The coordinator for SI is professional position in CPP. The coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the SI program. The coordinator hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates SI leaders. The coordinator establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with academic departments, faculty, and staff to promote the SI program to encourage student participation. The coordinator is the primary contact and resource for SI leaders and supports all aspects of the SI program. The coordinator reports to the Director of Peer Led Academic Success in Undergraduate Studies. The SI coordinator will work closely with the director and other campus constituents to identify innovative models of SI that best meets the changing needs of CSUSB students. 

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Serves as overall coordinator of the SI program by selecting and training SI leaders; assisting with compilation and on-going revision of SI leader training content and support materials; and planning and facilitating periodic group meetings and learning communities for SI leaders.
  • Solicits, interviews, and hires SI leaders by gathering faculty member nominations, advertising positions, interviewing approved candidates, and completing all paperwork required by Human Resources. Supervises SI student staff, each term, through observational sessions and regular meetings. Creates, maintains, and disseminates information to support SI success and professional development. Oversees timesheet completion and submissions.
  • Responsible for the professional development of SI leaders by; conducting observations of SI leaders and provide feedback to SI leaders following observations, goal setting and professional development plans for SI leaders, assist SI leaders plan and organize sessions as necessary, and support SI leaders implementation of active learning techniques and SI training materials into their sessions.
  • Schedules supplemental instruction sessions and coordinates appropriate classroom space to facilitate group learning.
  • Acts as a liaison to participating faculty and gathers their feedback concerning the SI program, as needed.
  • Collects and analyzes raw data (attendance, term grades, surveys, etc.) and submits quarterly report to the Director. Shares data with the Office of Institutional Research for the purpose of program improvement and assessment.
  • Promotes the SI Program to ensure ongoing funding, participation, and student success. Assists with marketing of the SI program by collaborating with the undergraduate studies marketing team. Produces announcements with session times, days, and places for distribution by SI leaders in individual classes, and by producing a master list of SI study sessions for campus-wide dissemination.
  • Works with the Director of Peer Led Academic Success to oversee the program budget.
  • Works independently and collaboratively to plan events, conduct presentations, host workshops, participate in orientation and more.
  • The coordinator will remain current regarding trends and developments in higher education, high-impact practices related to transition and student success, and SI programs. Will remain competent and current through self-directed professional reading, the development of professional contacts with colleagues, attendance at professional development courses/conferences, and trainings, as directed, by the Director.
  • The coordinator will represent the interests of Coyote PLUS Programs and will perform additional duties as assigned by the Director, including but not limited to Service on various university committees/task forces.
  • Some travel with some evenings and weekends required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent (Master's Degree highly preferred) from a four-year college or university in related Liberal Arts, Higher Education, Educational Administration, Counseling, Social Work, or Psychology AND three (3) years of professional experience in providing direct services to students in a higher education environment and/or at least three (3) years working in a Student learning center or academic success center.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master's degree in Liberal Arts, Higher Education, Educational Administration, Counseling, Social Work, Psychology or a directly related field is highly preferred.
  • A Master's Degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Experience fostering and maintaining effective relationships and ability to work collaboratively across organizational lines and coordinate the efforts of multiple areas is essential.
  • Must be able to exercise professional judgment and discretion, making decisions on a regular basis that impact student success, the department, and the institution.
  • Knowledge of academic success programs and student development theory is necessary.
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of public speaking.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Must be equity minded and cultural competent.
