Summary Comtech EF Data is looking for a Unit Manager for our Germantown, MD office. You will be responsible for managing and supervising an established development team that performs engineering work and applied research, development, and design of new products and technologies. Your work will include high complexity design and technology research and be recognize as an emerging authority in one or more areas of engineering. You will have the opportunity to participate in preparation of proposals for new processes and products, work with upper management to determine the technical objectives within an established department, direct and coordinate engineering activities of major magnitude and will have high accountability for results, teach, train, and enforce the established operating procedures governing the engineering process and usually represent the company as a customer contact regarding significant technical issues. This is the first level of Engineering Management.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. • Directs department activities to design new products, modify existing designs, improve production techniques, and develop test procedures. • Work includes high complexity design, fabrication, modification, and evaluation of electronic hardware or software. • Prepares or directs the preparation of detailed engineering drawings, schematics and/or design documents. • Solve problems using solutions that involve new techniques, technologies, or concepts. • Analyze technology trends, human resource needs, and market demand to plan projects. • Confer with management, production, and marketing staff to determine engineering feasibility, cost effectiveness, and customer demand for new and existing products. This includes providing feedback into roadmap priorities based upon customer interaction and industry experience. • Forecasts operating costs of department and directs preparation of budget requests. • Advise management of new developments which may affect profit, schedule, costs, customer relations, and/or inter-departmental relations. • Provide direction and example for interpretation and application of company policies and procedures to the engineering activities. • Maintain a working knowledge of new technologies which may improve operations and develops recommendations accordingly. • Maintains a working knowledge of safety policies and regulations to ensure duties of self and others are performed in a safe manner. • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis. • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Education and/or Experience BSEE or MSEE or equivalent for highly qualified individuals and/or ten years or greater related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
