JOB SUMMARY The Custodian is to perform general janitorial and light maintenance work in the care or Town buildings and grounds.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Sweeps, mops, strips, scrubs, buffs, waxes, and vacuums floor surfaces; spot cleans carpeted areas; schedules floor work to ensure least possible disruption of work routines in buildings • Cleans and sanitizes restroom areas, fixtures, and water fountains; replenishes paper supplies and soap as necessary; performs minor repairs on lavatory and plumbing fixtures; maintains related logs and documentation • Cleans office areas, windows, walls, air ducts, woodwork, blinds and light fixtures; dusts desks, ledges, and windowsills • Performs routine maintenance and upkeep; replaces light bulbs; polishes brass; paints wall; pressure washes sidewalks; reports faulty equipment to superior • Collects and empties trash in and around buildings and parking lots; deposits collected refuse in proper receptacles; deposits recyclable material in proper receptacles • Assists with preparing for and cleaning up from classes, programs and special events and projects; sets up and puts away tables, chairs, stage tents, sound equipment, etc. • Performs a variety of landscaping and maintenance duties (i.e. mows grass, clears leaves, tree limbs, and other debris from grounds, pressure washes sidewalks and patios, removes snow and ice from parking lots and walkways, etc.) • Follows safety procedures, reports unsafe activities and conditions, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; places safety cones, markers, or signs to alert employees/citizens of work areas, wet floors, or other potential hazards • Monitors inventory levels of equipment, cleaning materials, tools, and supplies; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; initiates requests for new or replacement items; stocks or distributes supply items • Performs general maintenance tasks as necessary to keep equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking/replacing fluids, refueling vehicles, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, or cleaning project work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports fault equipment • Reports problems such as water leaks, power failures, electrical problems, malfunctioning equipment, property damage, or other potential problems involving building operations; takes basic correction action as appropriate; reports problems to appropriate personnel • Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems; responds to requests for service or assistance • Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, time sheets, supply lists, work logs, or other documents • Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, invoices, work orders, product safety information, mixing instructions, equipment operating manuals, procedures, handbooks, reference materials, manuals, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate • Operates a motor vehicle, various scrubbers, buffers, vacuums, pressure washer, hand tools, lifts, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions • Performs other duties as required

JOB CONTEXT The Custodian will perform tasks that require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds). The ability work flexible hours/shifts outside of normal schedule may be mandated as circumstances and workload dictates. Essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, fumes, hazardous materials, heights, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers.
WORK PERFORMANCE The Custodian is required to follow departmental expectations and adhere to all rules, regulations, policies and procedures in the Town of Christiansburg Personnel Handbook. Work performance is reviewed utilizing the Town’s employee performance review program following first 6 month introductory period. During this introductory period, the employee must demonstrate a strong understanding of all that the job requires.
JOB REQUIREMENTS Education and experience • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent; supplemented by six (6) months experience in cleaning and light building maintenance; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Licenses and Certification • Valid, Virginia driver’s license with the ability to meet/maintain Town insurability requirements with a minimum of two (2) years driving experience

May include counting, recording of counts, and basic measuring • Carry out detailed but routine written and oral instructions and involves routine work according to clearly prescribed standard practices, with some latitude for independent judgment • Exercise judgment in situations characterized by repetitive or short cycle operations covered by well established procedures or sequences • Some tasks may require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals; some tasks may require the ability to communicate orally
