Job Description

Employment Status: Full-time, probationary, "exempt" position.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Ability to work some evenings and weekends.

Position Overview 
Reporting to the Associate Director for Residential Education, the incumbent will provide leadership for and have administrative oversight of all student leadership, student leader recruitment, student leader training initiatives. The position is a full-time, experienced professional who will serve as part of the Residential Education team responsible for the education and daily management of over 1,800 on-campus students and will play a crucial role in the development and administration of the student development and leadership program. The Student Leadership & Development Specialist assists in planning, designing and directing department-wide programming and engagement to positively impact student learning and retention. The position also provides leadership and oversight for village Front Desks. All activities of this position require close collaboration within the department as well as with academic and student affairs units.


  • Create an environment that promotes a sense of belonging and commitment to the campus community and orients students to the ideals of community living and CSUSB.
  • Provide support to the academic mission of the University by contributing to students' learning out of classroom learning, using specialized knowledge of learning theories, support of the student staff experience, and implementing programs that enhance the academic success of students.
  • Collaborate with offices in Student Affairs and Academic Affairs.

Student Leadership

  • Create a residential environment that facilitates the creation of student leadership opportunities such as clubs, student organizations, and intramural teams.
  • Advise and collaborate with Village Councils, RHA, and NRHH.
  • Recruit, develop, train, and support student leaders and organizations.
  • Provides training and resources to student leaders.

Student Staff Training and Selection

  • Coordinate and implement student leader selection and training processes in collaboration with Residential Education professional staff team.
  • Serve as chair of the Student Leader Selection Committee. Collaborate with Residential Education staff on selection, hiring, reappointment, assignment, and onboarding of Residential Education live-in student leaders; collaborate with campus partners to identify pool of candidates for student leader positions; solicit faculty and staff participation in selection processes.
  • Serve as chair of the Student Leader Training Committee. Oversee student staff training for Residential Education live-in student staff for Fall and Winter.
  • Assist with staff development and on-going student leadership development training during staff meetings and throughout the year as needed.
  • Create and present developmental workshops and training sessions as necessary.


  • Develop, promote, and coordinate academic, educational, cultural, recreational, service, and other programs that meet the needs of the diverse population. Larger campus-wide programs may include: Welcome Week, Tunnel of Oppression, Clothesline Project.
  • Market and promote events on social media and the HRE website.
  • Continuously assess residential student needs for additional programs and services.
  • Develop and implement, with the Residential Education professional team, learning outcomes, programmatic initiatives, and assessment tools.


  • Supervise, lead, and evaluate 4-5 student Program Coordinators.
  • Supervise, lead, and evaluate student Front Desk Assistants
  • In coordination with the Associate Director of Residential Education, develop performance measures and learning outcomes for student leaders and assess the effectiveness of those measures and outcomes.


  • Assist with various administrative processes, including but not limited to: check-in and check-out, regular review and revision of all Residential Education information, policies, and procedures.
  • Provide oversight of Front Desk program including: scheduling, maintaining and/or creating front desk procedures, ensuring good customer service
  • Conduct bi-weekly staff meetings and make recognition recommendations. Provide consultation to other staff who supervise students on personnel related matters.
  • Serve on after-hours on-call duty rotation responding to crisis situations including mental health issues, alcohol and other drug-related emergencies, and other behavioral issues.
  • Oversee budget including line items for programming, staffing, and operations. 
  • Prepare reports on programming, student leadership, staff training, and other reports as requested.


  • Serve on departmental and campus-wide committees as approved and requested by the Associate Director of Residential Education.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Associate Director of Residential Education.
  • Must possess the equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field and the equivalent to three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling.
  • Must have a knowledge of learning skills and styles, assessing processes or services to make improvements, designing and implementing leadership and training models.
  • Strong critical thinking, interpersonal, time management, and goal setting skills is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in decision­ making, problem-solving and organizational skills in a student life environment is required. 
  • Must have a knowledge in the areas of counseling and crisis intervention, conflict mediation, student and leadership development theory, multicultural and educational programming, academic support.
  • Must have the ability to oversee several projects simultaneously and work collaboratively with a diverse group of people.
  • Applicants must possess excellent written, interpersonal, and administrative skills. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in counseling, higher education or a related field and 3-5 years of previous work in university housing strongly preferred.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU.
