The Merck Early Discovery Neuroscienceteam is seeking a motivated and technically skilled student majoring inthe Biological sciences or pharmacy.  Successful candidates will beable to work independently, and will also be expected to proactively collaboratewith colleagues.  Primary responsibilities include contributing tothe execution of in vitro experiments including establishing in vitrocell-based model systems, development of immunoassays, and performingbiochemical and immunohistochemical analysis of tissues to support theidentification and validation of novel targets to treat CNS diseases. Thecandidate will be an active participant in the positive and critical scientificdialogue that supports our mission of target identification and validation. Thestudent should have strong interest in neuroscience and learning about CNS drugdiscovery.  
The responsibilities of the Early Discovery Neuroscience team member include:

  • Design, execute, interpret and report in vitro experiments.
  • Assist in developing, executing, and troubleshooting new cell-based assays,protocols and cell imaging methods.
  • Support characterization and validation of compound/biologic activity in cellbased and in vivo models.
  • Communication of data clearly and concisely to teams and stakeholders. 
  • Monitor, review and critically interpret published work to guide their ownresearch. 
  • Collaborate with members from other functional areas, including medicinalchemistry, in vivo and in vitro pharmacology, and genetics.
This is a full-time co-op position. Housing subsidy is not provided for this position and, if required, must be funded 100% by the student.

  • Required: Candidates must be currently enrolledin a BS/BAdegree in biological sciences or related disciplines such as chemistry,pharmacy or health related fields

RequiredExperience and Skills:

  • Candidatesmust be available to work full-time for up to (6) months beginning in mid 2019.
  • Candidatesmust have some experience with basic lab procedures: pipetting, solutionpreparation, plate assays.
  • Candidatesmust have some experience with basic mammalian cell culture, i.e.,transfections, primary neurons.
  • Candidatesmust have a demonstrated ability to perform accurate data analysis.
  • Candidatesmust have excellent oral and written communication skills, includingpreparation of lab reports and presentations. Strong attention to detail.
  • Candidatesmust have experience with rodent animal handling, in vivo procedures a plus.

PreferredExperience and Skills:

  • Candidates should have interest in conductingexperiments to determine efficacy of test compounds, establish dose-responseand pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic relationships, investigate biomarkerresponses and target engagement or modulation in vivo.
  • Candidates should have the desire to developknowledge of neuroscience drug discovery; neuroscience class work preferred.
