Job Description

Employment Status: Full-time, probationary, "non-exempt" position.

Work Schedule:  Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Applications will be reviewed beginning Wednesday, March 20, 2019.Under supervision, performs comprehensive support services for a discipline which makes extensive use of materials and supplies including those which are living or unique and scientific equipment both in upper and lower division laboratories or instructional centers.

The Instructional Support Technician will be responsible for the following job duties:

  • Transport, set up and manage the return of all equipment and materials needed for chemistry teaching laboratory sections as per laboratory preparation guide manuals. 
  • Maintain the collection, storage, and removal of hazardous waste produced in the labs. 
  • Coordinate cleaning assignments for the laboratories between experiments. 
  • Manage the chemistry stockroom customer window, ensuring effective assistance to students and faculty with materials and equipment, such as checking out and return of items for laboratory sessions, and charging students for broken items and keeping a record of these charges.
  • Facilitate the clean up of any chemical or hazardous spills that may occur according to approved procedures.
  • Supervise, train, and schedule federal work-study students (FWS) and other student assistants hired to help prepare laboratories and to staff the stockroom window during all course laboratories that are in session. 
  • Train student assistants on the preparation procedures and other procedures commonly required in the stockroom, answering routine questions, and adhearance to safety regulations.
  •  Collaborate with the Environmental Health & Safety office in accordance to safety regulations.
  • Procurement of chemicals, materials, and technical equipment. 
  • Stock, store, and distribute materials and equipment following laboratory guide manuals. 
  • Consult with the department chair and faculty members on the type of equipment and chemicals to purchase for various specific experiments and the efficient management and use of the preparatory manuals. 
  • Establish and maintain an electronic inventory of all chemicals and equipment,  Safety Data Sheets of all materials along with a Chemical Hygiene Plan.
  • Maintenance, operation, trouble-shooting, and minor repair of technical equipment and scientific equipment, which may include filling the NMR magnet with liquid nitrogen and helium, changing septa and columns on GC's, pump oil in mass spectrometers, setting up pH meters, melting-point apparatus, water polishers, centrifuges, etc. 
  • Minor repair of electrical and mechanical equipment.  
  • Cleaning and maintenance of burners, replacement of tubing, specialized glassware, hot plates, water baths, etc. 
  • Scheduling of advanced repair of scientific equipment with the corresponding manufacturer or company. 
  • Minor trouble-shooting and maintenance of computer equipment and common software applications related to the laboratories. 
  • Responding to any emergent concerns regarding correct and continuous operation of building equipment and scheduling of repairs with Heating and Air and the Physical Plant. This includes chemical vapor hoods and snorkels, cold rooms and refrigerators, electrical outlets, the deionized water supply, leaking pipes, etc

Experience:
Equivalent to three years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to the area to which assigned.
orEquivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area may be substituted for one year of the required experience.orEquivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for two years of the required experience.
Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the principles of performing support services;  principles, methods, and techniques related to the discipline and the curriculum; and materials and supplies in the curriculum and their uses.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and schedule activities;  operate technical equipment related to the discipline;  maintain records;  adjust and perform simple maintenance of technical and scientific equipment.

Physical Requirements:
          Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications:Bachelor's degree or 4+ years of formal technical training. Two years experience in daily            operations of  laboratories in a higher education environment. Ability to reason and address problems with the labs. Valid Driver's License.
