Job Description


The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the nation’s leading advocacy organization for children’s healthcare, is seeking a creative and organized team player to join our Publishing group. This position will manage project and developmental editing for new publications and assist with the editorial development of professional/clinical products. In addition, this position will serve as lead editorial staff on process improvement efforts.

Duties include:
1.    Coordinate and ensure timely development of AAP products and publications by collecting comments from technical reviewers, interpreting and integrating revised text.
2.    Work with authors, editors, managers, and publishers to ensure that professional/clinical editorial content is consistent with recommendations in AAP policy statements, manuals, and other professional and patient education materials.
3.    Manage the development of new professional/clinical publications and related products.
4.    Oversee editorial team efforts to improve the styling process and manuscript quality in handoff from developmental editors to Production staff.
5.    Oversee editorial team efforts to improve document management and version control challenges with authors and editors.
6.    Lead editorial team efforts to research and implement workflow process improvements for developmental editing and production management.
7.    Collaborate with Marketing and Sales staff to develop comprehensive marketing plans for new and existing AAP products.
8.    Assist with the developmental editing and project management of priority professional/clinical publications as directed.
9.    Research and acquire reprint permissions for media items used in all professional/clinical publications.
10.    Manage the work of outside editorial and administrative consultants on professional/clinical publications.
11.    Manage compliance with AAP Conflict of Interest disclosure requirements for Publishing activities. Collect and document disclosures from authors and editors.
12.    Obtain peer review assessments of product credibility and coordinate interdepartmental evaluations of proposed projects.

Qualifications:
1.    Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism or communications or an equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience required.
2.    At least three years’ experience in writing and editing required, including public/author contact. Experience with a professional medical publisher preferred, along with experience in project management and product development.
3.    Excellent editorial, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills required, as well as proven ability to work with medical professionals and proficiency with MS Office.
4.    Must be able to handle numerous projects simultaneously and pay close attention to detail. Some evening/weekend work may be required.
