Job Description


The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the nation’s leading advocacy organization for children’s healthcare, is seeking a creative and organized team player to join our Department of Publishing. This position will identify, develop, and publish new publications and products to enhance the Academy’s publishing line and generate revenue.

This individual will perform the following job duties:

1. Research and submit proposals for new products and expanded product lines.
2. Manage the development of new products for the Perinatal Education Program (PCEP) and other new publications and products as assigned. 
3. Negotiate author and consultant contracts for new products.
4. Develop and manage the editorial publishing schedules for new and revised products.
5. Oversee the work of outside editorial consultants on AAP publications.
6. Oversee the process of obtaining peer review assessments of project credibility and coordinate interdepartmental evaluations of proposed projects.
7. Create and administer guidelines for developmental editing and publishing support for new publications.
8. Provide AAP authors and staff volunteers with guidance in the development and writing of AAP publications.
9. Manage a system of routine product evaluation for AAP products and product lines.
10. Work with Editorial and Production Services staff on the preparation of annual publishing calendars.
11. Collaborate with Marketing and Sales staff to develop comprehensive marketing plans for new and existing AAP products.
12. Develop and manage income/expense budgets for proposed new publications.

Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications or related discipline required, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience required. 
2. Five to seven years experience in writing, editing, and acquisitions, including knowledge of medical terminology required.
3. Experience with a professional medical publisher highly desirable, along with experience in project management and product development.
4. Must be detail-oriented, well organized, able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously, and collaborate effectively with various internal and external constituents, and have basic knowledge of publishing terminology and production process. Excellent editorial, interpersonal, communication and organizational skills required, as well as proficiency with MS Office. Some travel and weekend work required.
